5th of Mayonnaise.

What did you do for Cinco de Mayo?

I spent hours looking for this subject because I assumed I must have written about it, in fact I swear I did. But it can not be found.

I grew up in a small town. It was a very damn big deal when the restaurant Chi-Chi's came to town. Back when this happened there weren't a lot of food choices in town. No Thai, no Mexican, no BBQ etc.
Chi-chi-s was my first introduction to Mexican food. Hard to even imagine today but this was many moons ago.
Everyone went to Chi-Chi's if for no other reason but to get a margarita and eat some chips and salsa. Authentic Mexican cuisine, I think not.
But I did not know that then. It was all new to me.

When I made the move to a bigger city I was exposed to so many more food choices. When I began working in the travel industry that helped expose to a lot of foods and people which I loved!
But this day we were visiting Seattle.
We arrived at a Red Robin for a quick lunch in Seattle.
On all the tables there were little placards saying Cinco de Mayo.
From 6th grade Spanish I knew Cinco was 5.
But 5 of mayonnaise? I didn't get it.
I kept reading the placard and Rick asks me what is so interesting. I say, like a fool, what the hell is the 5th of mayonnaise?

He looked at me and in all seriousness says, "Margaret, you die your hair brown don't you?"  I know that meant to him I'm being a dumb blonde.
Nope, being a dumb brunette!
Again I ask, "well, what is the 5th of mayo? I don't get it."
He is laughing like a fool. I was getting a bit perturbed by him.
When he came up for air he told me it was The 5th of May. He went on,
"It is a Mexican celebration about a battle they won over the French empire he thinks in the 1800's.  So it is celebrated on the 5th of May.
Mayo= May Margaret. The 5th of May" Not mayonnaise.

Okay, who feels like the fool now. So of course I too am laughing at myself.
That was so many moons ago but Rick brings it up every year. If you know him you are saying to yourself as you read this, "why of course he does"

Yesterday he text me and said since it is the 5th of mayonnaise how about taco's for dinner and some margaritas. Of course, that sounds fine to me.
But just once I wish he'd forget that I ever said that. But he won't.
Picking on me is a sport where he is MVP.

So what did you do on your 5th of Mayonnaise?

I have a Cinco story!
Back in my old department at work, my dear friend Jenn sent out an email blast to the department wishing us all a happy Mexican Independence Day. She followed that up shortly with a disclaimer that she made a mistake and it was actually the anniversary of a Mexican win over the French.

Not being able to let that pass, I shot her an email saying, "Thanks for the late warning. I just got reamed out by one of our Mexican branches for wishing them a happy Independence Day."

I thought she'd know I was kidding... after all, while we did have business in Mexico, our department didn't work with them. I figured she'd know I was just being a wise guy.

Ten minutes later, another associate pokes her head in my cube and says, "You better go over there and chill Jenn out. She's freaking out because she got you in trouble."

So I did... I let her know I was just kidding. She was too relieved to be pissed at me. And so every year, like Rick would do, I text her, "Happy Mexican Independence Day!"

What would life be without Rick teasing you. That's a good enough reason to celebrate the 5th of Mayo.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Hmm....Jean I think it would be just fine. 😁

May the 4th be with you.
May the 5th be with you. Just don't drink it too fast.

Mike, I was watching a ballgame on ESPN. Not a good place to watch baseball anyway - but they were all dressed as star wars characters. Never having seen a single movie of Star Wars I had no idea what the hell they were doing dressed like this. Then someone says, May the 4th be with you and I got it. But with baseball? But the 5th be with me - that I can get down for. 😋

Oh great, now I will forever think of the "holiday" as Cinco de mayonnaise!

This might sound impossible but while I have known of this holiday for years, I only heard the spoken version and have never seen it in print. Hey, I get the mayo-nnaise connection.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Abby, ha ha- now you too will have the new holiday of the 5th of mayo😝

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Patti, thank you. I had only seen it in print at that time so there is that. Either way i get why I look like a moron all those years ago. Well who am I kidding, even now.😕

So now it's not just Rick who won't forget 5th of mayonnaise, all us readers will remember as well. LOL. I can't drink, wish I could because margaritas sound wonderful. Instead I made probably the best tasting tamales I've ever made - vegan style, potatoes and kale.

We had hot dogs lol. Miss our little bar being open and drinking the night away with margaritas.

I had me some Taco soup for Cinco de Hellman's. Not really very Mexican dish at all. At least it was good!

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Boots, you had me until Kale, bitter gross kale. I wish it had never become a fad. gee, ya think I hate kale? :-)

Julie, I miss that too. But hey a hot dog sounds good. I miss the buns though.

Brian, Taco soup sounds pretty damn good to me. Cinco de Hellman's. Now that's good. I may have to share that with Rick. Do you know that Hellman's is on the east coast and the same mayo is called Best on the west coast. I couldn't find Hellman's, our favorite when living out west so we called the company and they told us they use the name Best on the west coast. Who knew? Now you do 😋

Well Olga laughing is good for your health so maybe it will help heal the retina/eye quicker. I'm glad My airheadedness is helpful. :-)
