In my corporate career, I traveled so much that towards the end after 20+ years I would dream of being home at one with my stuff for long periods of time.
I'd forget what city I was in, I'd forget where Rick was. He too traveled almost as much as me at the time. So it was easy to lose track of where each of us was at any given time.
I remember a time when Rick called me and asked where I was. I told him I was still in upstate NY and that after I left Albany I was flying to Rochester and then I'd be home. He was in Maine - so close but not close enough. But the good news is we should arrive at our home airport at the same time. We had these crazy calls all the time.
On weekends we really didn't want to do any type of traveling.
Just the idea of traffic, airports, awful people being pushy and horrible restaurant food was not appealing. and heaven forbid we didn't want to travel on a week long vacation either. We wanted to be still.
No one understood this. We would get to our lake house and just be still.
No restaurants or bars. We wanted to be at our home, float on the lake, ride in a boat and be at home. We ate out all the time while traveling so the idea of eating at home was appealing. The pace we were looking for was slow after the hectic pace of traveling every day. The food, the hectic pace, the hotels all get old when you do it every few days every week. Your own bed never feels so good as when you've been traveling all week and that first night home. Aaah.
Now here we are 10 years later and I would do anything to travel more.
See? Be careful what you wish for.
I got into the travel industry for my love of travel. But after 20+ years it did get old. Now I go nowhere and I long for it again. I am itching to go.
I have a list you see and it looks like this.
- Italy - yep, the homeland. I need a few weeks in Italy. Eat, tour and drink wine. Be pretty cool if I actually found a few Malizia's.
- New Zealand - I have met some wonderful people from there and I just think it looks so beautiful that I would so like to go.
- UK- (Ireland)I have friends there I would love to see. Of course, I'd have to go to London and Scotland just because I'm there.
- Hawaii - because nothing is better than a beach vacation to Rick and me.
There are plenty more places I would like to go but right now these are my top 4. Since I can't do these 4 right now I am just taking a full week up north on Lake Erie. That won't be calm because family is there but it's a vacation and it's on water and it will be far cooler than it is here.
That will be wonderful. The 80's sound glorious right now.
In the meantime right here at home Izzy and I got to go to her 4 week check up from her surgery.
My appointment was at 7:45am on Wednesday. When I opened the back door for her to get out, she moved to the other door and just shook. Her whole body shakes like she is frozen, but it's fear. I tried grabbing her from her belly to lift her (yes, lifting 80lbs is not easy) I couldn't get her because she was fighting me so. I left her there, shut the door to the car, and went inside and asked for help.
The young man came out and saw what we were dealing with.
He asked me if she had a bad experience here.
I replied, "well if you call cutting her open and fixing her ACL and causing her a great deal of pain, then yes she has had a traumatic experience here"
He remarked with a laugh, "Well that will do it I guess"
He was able to lift her easily and drag her out of the car.
We entered the room for her exam and she backs up into me and is leaning on me so much I feel all of her weight. She is shaking but mildly now so she seemed to be getting more comfortable.
Here she is against my leg.
I don't think it shows you how much she is leaning on me but you get the idea. She has all her weight on my leg.
The doctor was very happy with her progress. She is exactly where they want her to be. She can swim now but not lift off. So we have to walk her into the water trying to avoid any slippery rocks/stones. Then allow her to swim.
Yesterday Rick said to her, "Izzy would you like to go swimming" She jumped up and ran to the door. We aren't allowed to let her run. But try stopping her after you say the word SWIM.
I was still working so I couldn't go with them to swim. Rick said he took her to an area clear of the stones and walked in the water with her before he threw her bumper toy.
She swam out to get it but not near as fast as she used to do.
He did this 2 times. Then he said, "Are you ready to go home?" She walked right to the car. Normally she will make noise because she doesn't want to go home.
So we knew 2 times was enough for a start for her.
This is supposed to be her physical therapy. 2 times a week to build up her strength and muscle in her leg. Her walks can increase as well. Thank God. This dog wants to walk and is chomping at the bit to go.
We are to begin 10 minute walks for 1 week then increase to 15 minutes for a week etc.
At 8 weeks she will be completely ready to resume her life according to Doctor Blue Eyes. When I told him where we were vacationing to ask him about her swimming he assumed I lived in Cleveland. He asked me where in Cleveland I was from. I said Lake Erie goes all the way to NY why do you think I'm from Cleveland? Come to find out it was because he was from Cleveland so he just assumed Cleveland and Lake Erie. I told him no, it was Erie PA on Lake Erie. He thought her swimming was a great way to improve her leg quickly and with less stress on her.
The best news we received is that she can do stairs. No more baby gate, no more sleeping on the sofa for me. If you recall me telling you if we are both upstairs she tries to climb the stairs, which she should never do. The first week she couldn't climb the stairs but cried for us. The doctor told us that one of us should sleep with her on the 1st floor during her recuperation.
So I got the job of being the sofa sleeper and waking never feeling refreshed.
She came upstairs last night and was in bed (next to our bed.) After about 3 minutes of being in bed, lights out etc. She walks over to Rick to be sure he was there and then my side to be sure I was there. We laughed. Then she went back to her bed and slept until 5:15 am.
It was all wonderful - all of us back upstairs and me sleeping in a bed!!
Life is good.
Here is the view from the deck of the place we rented on the lake.
Izzy should get a lot of swimming in here. I hope it is as nice as the photos. You never know what you are getting.
