Does he even live here?

While I am complaining about Rick I thought I'd share another beef other than his lack of bed making skills.
He says he can't believe I can find any others. Oh please.

He unloaded the dishwasher two weeks or so ago while I was out.
When I got home and saw this I thanked him for doing the dishes and unloading the dishwasher. But honestly ladies he doesn't make it easy. And there is no way in hell I will ever say, "Oh don't do it dear I'll do it". NO. Keep doing it. It's like a friggin' scavenger hunt when you unload the dishwasher, Rick. I'm up for the game.

Can you even imagine what would happen if I did not put a tool or object in the exact spot he feels they live in in that damn garage? Oh no.
Holy hell that would be bad. He would have such a hissy fit. And I stay out of the garage at all costs. He actually lives in this house and has for over 18 years. So there is a difference. Or so you'd think.

I could not find the lid to my small grater that is a bowl style with 2 types of lids for different grates for shredding or grated etc. I looked for days in places I thought he could have put this.

I asked him where he might have put the lid since it was not where it has lived for 18 years. He looked at me like I had a 3rd eye. Then he got up and walked to the cabinet where the grater bowl sits. 'Huh', he says.
Yes, Rick, that is what I am thinking. So you knew it went there but yet you put it somewhere else.
What the hell? Is this a man thing?

Then I was looking for a bowl. Nope, not with all the bowls nesting. Hmmm...
I have now found the grater - a week later.
He put it inside the roasting pan. Yep, that makes lots of sense.
The bowl you ask? Oh found that above the fridge.
Not nesting into all the others as it has been in 18 years. No siree.

Actually, I didn't find that bowl because I can't reach up there.
NEVER would have looked there.
He remembered at 10p on a Saturday night while we were watching a movie. He jumped out of the chair like his pants were on fire.
I asked, "Are you okay?"  He just said YEP.
I watched him go to the cabinet and take out this bowl.
A bowl I might add, that was sitting atop some small items that I don't use often, balancing precariously. I just laughed as he put it on the island and stated, "You can put this wherever you want now" Wherever I want? I said, "how 'bout you just put it where it goes?"  He pointed to a cabinet and said, "here?" as he laughed. Yes, you big ass, so you do know where it has always lived.

The last thing was a couple of utensils. It really doesn't matter which utensils they were they were not in the utensil drawer. How can he assume they would go anywhere else. When he needs one to flip a burger on the grill he goes into this drawer so why would he put them away somewhere else? Rhetorical question really.

I swear he is trying to drive me crazy or make me think that dementia has set in. That is my theory and I'm sticking to it.
If you come here one day and I have been committed to a rubber room you will know what happened.   Hey, I watch a lot of Dateline and 48 hours, It's always the husband you know!😟

Making a Bed

In every relationship roles take place.
Over time Rick's role has been of garbage taker outer & handyman work.
Which I might add is a whole lot of stuff around here!
Margaret's has been everything else.

Rick is a man who can build anything I ask out of nothing more than a few paper clips and twine. My very own McGyver.
But for the love of God, he can't make a bed.
I truly believe he does this on purpose.
He can't possibly be that clueless, can he? He calls it a 'block'.
Block my ass I always say.
He can't do the hospital corners. Come on that isn't difficult.
My mom showed me as a kid and I could do them.
I have shown him this over & over again for 31 years.
Is he really that dumb?

He had me use his saw once and insisted on teaching me how to do something on this damn saw. I was so afraid of losing a finger and I told him I liked my fingers and jewelry too much to learn. I am clumsy and accident prone, I don't want to be clumsy with a saw. But he insisted until I did it. I did it but did not like it. I did it again and he kept saying, look how good you are. I then said, "Okay you won, I learned, but I don't wish to do this ever again please." I will use any tool except a saw!

Sunday as I was stripping the bed he asked if he could help. I paused.
He said, "You really have to think about that?" I laughed and said do you wish for me to share what I was thinking?
He laughed and nodded yes.
I told him that I had to decide, is it worth him doing this and me doing it over again or me trying to show him for the 400th time and me doing it over again myself anyway?

He sat on the bed and had a good laugh. I see your point he says.
He said he really doesn't know why he can't get this, but let me try again. So foolish me did.
Halfway through he ripped it off in frustration and threw me on the bed laughing.
He did not learn how to make a bed Sunday.
But after all our fun on said bed, I still had to make the damn bed! Men!

Your Last Meal

Rick and I have joked over the years what our last meal would be.
Then it became our last full day what would we eat?
It has never changed for us.

Then last week Rick was trying to make me laugh and he brought this up.
I laughed at his story and then thought, you know I'd have a whole different day plan of eating this time.

Now that I have had to be gluten free I would have a day of gluten.
I mean if this indeed was my last meal then I'm dying so I would not have to worry about all the illness and ugliness that would ensue. I could eat away.

Rick asked if I would still do that if I knew how sick I would be? Hell yes I would. Even if my doctor was yelling about how I am killing myself. Who cares? It's my last day, allow me to enjoy it and pig out.

So here is my last day.
Breakfast -  Frosted mini wheat cereal, and a raspberry pop tart on the side. Totally gluten and fattening. And boy do I miss my favorite cereal!

Lunch - pizza, lots of pizza, let me wear elastic waist pants kind of pizza day.
With a piece of cake and wine chaser. (okay wine I can have now but I still want it)

Snack - Pizzelles, or maybe a box of thin mints or Oreos, cake and danish and anything else I have longed for since my diagnosis.

Dinner - Gnocchi, great crusty Italian bread to dip in the EVOO with parm and red pepper flakes with an antipasto and wine.
Some type of cake, with a second helping of cake

I mean to tell you, I will feel miserable but I'm dying, right?
I told Rick this is my last day and all this eating won't make me feel like having sex and he laughed so loudly. He said we can have sex before I strap on my feed bag. Ah, smart boy.

I mean that is more food in a day than I eat in a week.
Let alone it's all gluten so by the time I got to lunch I would already be sick.  Ah, who cares? Bring on the gluten for the glutton!😒

What would your last day of food be?

You're Fired!

Ah, the new guy.

Finding people is pure hell. I hate it.
The phone interviews, then the in-person interviews.
The things people say and you wish to respond with, Oh please, just leave.
But of course, you can't.

Rick being from an HR background we agreed to let him take the lead.
I want less on my plate, not more.
Rick had a phone interview with this man and was really excited to meet him. His only concern at this time was his age and I yelled at him for that since we had that issue when we lost our corporate jobs, no one would even talk to us due to age so I said you have to at least hear him out.

Rick prayed he did not limp into the store, which others have and of course limping with a cane will not allow you to do the physical labor required let alone steps into a condo.  You have to laugh honestly.

For some reason, Rick asked if I wanted to go with him to meet him.
He thought getting another opinion would be good. Be careful what you wish for.

Because this business is out of our home, we feel it is best to meet elsewhere.
Believe it or not, we meet a local Starbucks where there are an enormous amount of tables and areas to do this. It is in our development and convenient so that is what we chose.

This man pulls up in his Mercedes.
We looked at one another and I said, "What was on his resume as his previous job?"  He was a painter. Hmm...
His plates also showed another state.
I again ask Rick to see his resume.

He entered without a limp. He came over and shook our hands and was articulate and professional. He appeared younger than the age we assumed at this point. (can't ask you know) He had great answers for everything. But something felt off to me. He had a perfect answer for everything and that was odd to me. He was a bit of a unicorn.

We mentioned things like he'd have to get a VA license to drive our vehicle. It is required by our insurance company. I said, "You've lived here for 6 years you stated, you do know you are to get your new license within 60 days right?"
He just laughed and didn't respond. We repeated that we will need him to do this is he willing. He said yes.

Fast forward to the end of all of this and he left. Rick and I went back home to our office to discuss. Rick wanted to hire him. I felt there was something off here. But working with your spouse I have learned to let some things go more than I would if I did not work with him. I wish to stay married so you let more go, whereas if I just worked with him I would have been adamant about not hiring this guy. Rick knew I did not wish to hire him and he knew why so my opinion was heard but I knew he was going to hire him anyway. He did. He couldn't start until the end of Feb. Thank goodness we had 3 weeks to wait.

To get him on all of our insurances he needed to have a vehicle record check and a soft background check. We can not have criminals going into other peoples homes. He signed the paperwork to allow us and off we went.

While waiting for all of this I went through all his paperwork again looking for things Rick may have missed. Of course, I did not share this with Rick but I really felt strongly that something was amiss.

He referred to his wife as the person he lived with. She had a different last name but that isn't unusual. His cell phone came across with her name. I didn't find that too odd figuring it was a family plan perhaps in her name. But then I see that he put her as a reference and said she was a former customer. His wife was another female name with his last name and she lived in another state (not the same as license plate either)and he listed her as a reference WHAT? Your wife or girlfriend or both cannot be a reference.

I put the address he gave on his application into google and it was a UPS site in another city. The address on his resume was different but still local. Again, anyone can get a PO box at UPS so that should not be a big deal but just odd that his application says one thing and his paperwork for our insurance etc. says another.

Before saying anything to Rick I thought I'd throw it out there to the applicant when he called with the paperwork I was asking for. He called to tell me he did not have a printer or computer. Okay, snail mail will take too long I tell him. (this is a man who had on his resume he went to an IT technical school with no technology, odd no?)  He asked me to email his wife (with the different last name) and she will scan his paperwork and email it back to us.

I say, Hey while I have you on the phone, you know you can't use your wife as a reference. Either one of them. He nervously laughed. I said I will need another reference. He said he had none except the other he left because he has been self-employed. I then said, "While I have you on the phone, why did you give me two addresses for your home address? Which is it? (I did not tell him it was the UPS store at this point)
He said well I must have made a mistake. I said, "yes, one is a UPS store. He said, well we have an issue with getting our mail so we use the UPS store and rent a box there. I went along with him and said Oh I get it.

Yes, I got it. Something was amiss. That doesn't mean he doesn't deserve a job but he is already lying to me. What is wrong here and why do I feel it and see it and Rick doesn't?

He had a seat belt violation on his motor vehicle check and that is considered no big deal to the insurance company so he passed. But oh the rest was horrible. He had a criminal record of domestic violence charges (2) against him and a few others that dealt with drinking. He told us he never drank and when I laughed at the interview and said good for you. He laughed and said he has never touched a drop. We just moved on. (he was a paisan and I'm sorry but I have yet to meet one who doesn't at least have a sip of wine in their life)

He also had a bankruptcy. I think that may explain a lot of this. Again, no reason to not hire him, in fact, a damn good reason to help him get back on his feet.

I finally felt I had to show all this I have found to Rick. I said who are these woman? They are his wife and girlfriend? He is hiding for a reason too and I assume that is due to the bankruptcy. I get that. I would never judge him for that. A beating of a spouse, yes I will be honest and say I will judge him on that. Call me horrible, but if he beats women he is scum and I don't want him here. And it wasn't once. It was twice in two separate years. If he gets angry at someone while in their home (and normally a woman will be the ones giving the guys grief) will he resort to hitting them? Some I want to hit for Pete's Sake, but we can't.

If he were hiding from the wife with the same last name why would he put her as a reference?  None of the dots connected. Nothing made sense. Each time a question was asked he had a different answer. Why was he lying? If he is lying about the little stuff wouldn't he lie about the big stuff? Then he says when confronted with a few things that he plans to leave this state and purchase his fathers home in Philly. So why do we want someone who is going to leave right away? When this came up in our interview that is not what he said. So again, another lie.

OMG. We can't hire this guy and I prayed Rick would see that on his own.
Again, I can't allow work to cause us to fight or we'd be divorced by now.
Working with your spouse is far different than just living with them, trust me on this. I must tread lightly as must he.

Over dinner, I ask Rick if he's had a chance to see all the info I gave him on this guy. He read it all. He was sick that he had to call him and say he was rescinding his offer. He then added, "You knew this all along didn't you?" No, I didn't know for certain but something was off. It was just that feeling I get that I have talked about with you for 31 years!

This guy was too good to be true. No one is like that. He was a professional interview is how it came across to me. And then he really screwed up when he filled out the application which differed from his resume. Then the paperwork for insurance checks were the 3rd version of things.  Then with his wives, the woman he lives with that he calls his wife, the one on his application that he calls his wife, and all the other addresses and he couldn't tell me why. If he had said, "I filed for bankruptcy and so they don't take everything I have left I have had to do this or that." I probably would have believed him. That is no reason not to be hired and in fact a reason to help him.  But he wasn't so great at the lying which I guess is a good thing. But a dumb criminal you know? A dumb ass who drives a very nice Mercedes SUV, lives in a very tony neighborhood and had on very expensive clothes. His bankruptcy was 6 years ago but I think it's 10 before he can buy things in his own name. Which would explain the phone in his local wife's name. Still, there were so many other things that didn't fit that I am not telling you about so there was a very long list. I wish he had just been honest from the get-go.

Out of all the arrests, the thing that I wanted an answer to had nothing whatsoever to do with the job. I was just nosey. Who is this wife in another state and who is this woman he is calling his wife who he lives with here locally? Inquiring minds want to know. Not relevant to a job but I am nosey and now I want to know darn it.

We did hire a new person. This one is a kid. He will be 25 in a couple of months.
I had nothing to do with any of the interviews. I left it all up to Rick.
I didn't want to know. I'll let you know about him another time.
But I do know he hasn't beaten a soul and his driving record is great. Everything on his resume matches his application and other assorted paperwork. Oh and same social security number on his paperwork. Go figure,  no mistakes as the other guy called it. yea, a mistake. A mistake is a number off, not a completely different number.
So we will see how this new guy goes, right?

It's Friday. I am so tired of it all. This has been a tough long week.
I am playing the lotto tonight so if I win I will let ya'll know and then I'm out of here. Somewhere I can put my toes in the sand and just chill.
No more people!!!

Curly Hair...Err Fries.

Yesterday someone was talking with Rick and me about an experience he had at a restaurant which makes him no longer be able to eat rice.
Rick laughed and said the only thing he would prefer not to eat is a green olive. Prefer not to eat is the key here.
I have a long list. Contrary to what I look like I am an extremely picky eater.
Rick, well he's like Mikey and he'll eat anything, ANYTHING.

Then this fellow told us both this place he ate that had an insect in his rice and since then he can't eat rice. He did not see it and he crunched on it. He spit it onto his plate which horrified his spouse. While she was yelling at him for spitting in public on his plate, he was looking at an insect he almost swallowed on his plate.

Yea, that would do it for me.
Rick laughed and said well it was something at this restaurant, you can still make rice. He said, no I can't, I just can't. It crunched. It was gross.
I just can't. I understood him.

Rick can't wrap his head around this. Rick will eat all food all the time.
Once as a kid I threw up after having a chocolate chip cookie. Never eaten them since. Rick can't fathom that. If he threw up after eating a cookie, he'd brush his teeth and have more of those cookies. It wouldn't bother him in the least. Took me 30 years before I could even think about drinking vodka again. No, I'm a wuss. Rick not so much in the food department.

For me, the big one is Arby's curly fries.
I was working in Cleveland Ohio and had to see several clients in Boardman, Ohio and the surrounding area. (about an hour and a half drive)
I drove down in the very early morning and saw several of my clients from morning until 5ish.  This is not a thriving metropolis but somewhere I had to go none the less. Upon leaving I was driving on a road with a lot of fast food restaurants and thought I'd stop and grab some dinner for the drive home. Not many choices since this was a small town.

I did not eat lunch and  I was starving and thought I'd get myself a beef and cheddar (yes before I knew I was celiac) and some curly fries for the ride home.
I get my meal through the drive-thru and hit the road.
I ate my sandwich first. I left the fries for a bit later.
Then later I opened the bag again and started on my fries.
I got one in my mouth and I felt something weird.
I pulled over because it was a weird feeling and stuck to my tongue like a string.
It was a thick hair that was wrapped around the entire curly fry - a very long hair around a long curly fry and my tongue.

When I untangled it off my tongue and pulled this out of my mouth and saw this long curly dark hair. It grossed me out big time.
Once this hair was off  my tongue, I spit this out into my napkin and needless to say I did not eat another curly fry.
When I got home I threw them away!

To this day I can't eat a curly fry. I don't care if I make them.
I gag just thinking about it.
Rick, of course, finds this funny. That too wouldn't bother him. He'd remove the hair and keep on eating.  Eeww.

Is there anything that you just can't eat ever?

I'm Not A Priority

A few weeks ago I shared with you that I wished to leave our payroll company since my rep left. The new rep didn't call for payroll for 2 weeks in a row. When I would call her she would not return my calls. The ole, I'm so busy.
To me, the interpretation of I'm too busy is you're not important enough for me to deal with right now.

If I told that to our little customers like a one bathtub person vs. a hotel that would be terrible. I would think we'd lose a lot of customers just on reviews alone!  So telling me you're too busy is not a reason, it's an excuse.

I told them I was leaving when I wrote the earlier post. Oh my, then all the people were calling me and making promises. They gave me a new rep in Greensboro who they said would be terrific. I really didn't want to make the change so instead of doing what I knew I should do, I stayed.

They gave me a new rep who's name we will say was J.
I have a new employee coming on board. I needed some forms.
I called J on Wednesday of last week. I called again on Thursday.
I left voicemails each day. I wrote an email on Thursday as well.
I called again on Friday and sent an email and copied in his supervisor this time.
He wrote back on Friday after that email - surprise - at 5:15pm.
Sadly I knew copying in his supervisor would get him to respond.
I walked away from the desk that day on time for a change so I did not see it until Saturday.
His email said, "I'm so sorry I've been so busy, I'll call you Monday."

Monday, he did not call. I called him in the afternoon. He was not in on Monday his voicemail said. I had already written an email to him and his supervisor asking for a return call or we would not have the paperwork in on time. Nothing.
At 4:30pm I called and pressed 0 to get anyone. I need this paperwork filed before this guy starts on the following Monday. I need a full week they told me.

I got a random person who offered to help me when I pressed 0.
She sent me all the things I was asking for. As soon as we hung up I had the paperwork. Then I got a call from my rep's supervisor. I told her I have been trying to reach my rep for 4 days.
She said, well he has other priorities. Pardon me? I was now livid but since they have my checking account number I was nice. But in my mind - I'm done!
I asked her politely, "Did I understand you correctly? I am not a priority?"
She said, "well you are small so you aren't our biggest priority."
I said, "Okay I hear you. Thank you for your time'

I hung up. I called my online banking service and got them to be sure no more monies were taken from my account from this company.  Then I wrote them and told them I was no longer going to use their services. Boy did I get a response quickly. I asked for the forms to make this cancellation official. I filled them out, scanned and emailed them back. I did not want to be charged for the coming month which would happen if not done promptly.

I got a couple of emails saying they could make this right. I ignored them.
And something in me decided to see if I was the only one who has had a bad experience with them. I googled the company and their reviews. Oh, my goodness everyone had a difficult time with them.
A consumer affairs site came up and ooooh weee it was bad.
I should have done that years ago before hiring them.

I spent the rest of Monday looking for new payroll companies.
I talked to 3 and did online research. I prefer not to do this all online only.
Should an issue arise I need to have a contact.
I know, I hear you, that is old fashion of me.
But over the 3 yrs Gary was here, it was nice to pick up the phone or send an email and get an immediate response to resolve the problem .
(back in the days when Elizabeth was my rep that is)

I found a company in Maryland. They charge a bit more but there are no contracts and I hope to be able to make this work.
They work in and around the DMV so it all works for us.
(sorry, DMV means The District, VA and MD)

I have an assigned rep once again so we'll see how that works.
They advertise they are a small business payroll company.
Their reviews were stellar.
We will see I suppose. I do wish I understood all this stuff because it would save us money for me to do that too. But I can only wear so many hats. I am not a CPA and honestly numbers are my kryptonite. I just hate doing all of that and Rick doesn't have time to take it on either.

There are these small companies that the internet touts as good and the one that got stellar reviews states on their website that they do not guarantee your work on your quarterly taxes. One of the companies was called Gusto. They got 5 stars.  Why would anyone use them?  Just to be sure I understood that correctly I called the number on the site and had to inquire. I asked if I understood that to mean that they will do our quarterly taxes but if they are wrong they are not responsible. She told me that was indeed correct.
Hmm...to me, that was not so good. I need someone to do my taxes and I am certain they are done correctly so I don't get into any type of tax debt as well as guarantee me they did it right. You know like H & R block or Turbo Tax when doing your annual taxes. I don't see how anyone would choose to do business with a company that isn't going to guarantee their work. For us anyway that was a red flag. Then again, maybe we're nuts. Or both.

I will share the nightmare called hiring in another post.
For now I am thrilled to pieces to get this moving.
Someone new is starting and I pray he gets the hang of the job and works out.

Presidents Day

My flowers are all confused.
I see them rearing their heads out of the dirt and then they get snow on them.
It is 76 degrees, then an inch of snow 2 days later.
Then it's 45, then 75. Today is in the 50's and the next two days in the mid 70's.
Weird winter.

I have so enjoyed our cold but snowless winter.
I know now after living here awhile that this will mean a horrific summer.
To me, the definition of a horrific summer is very very hot and humid.
I don't like 90's and 100's and I surely don't like them before August.
But I have a feeling that this summer is going to be brutal.
I am not a fan of humidity and we don't get warm weather without that.

I love spring and fall. It's warm and the humidity is low.
I need to move somewhere like that all the time.
I used to think growing up on Lake Erie that our summers were hot.
I remember thinking August was unbearable. It was in the 80's.
Now that makes me laugh.
When I moved here after living in the pacific northwest I learned you could have 100% humidity and not have rain. I also learned I didn't like it.

Rick came home Saturday with flowers.
He was at Lowes and across the street in a plaza was a florist with a big sign saying spring is in here. He went in and came home with some spring flowers.
I love flowers. I had a friend visit and she is an empty nester and divorced and she had a bit to drink so she spent the night. I put some in her bedroom and she got such a kick out of that. I just think flowers make you happy, don't you?

Today is a holiday, Presidents Day. I imagine the bloated orange guy in office is golfing somewhere celebrating the holiday. Others are out buying sheets and bedding because of all the sales. Don't you wonder how sheets became a sale for Presidents Day?

Me, I'm working. I find it a bit humorous that we get more calls when people are in their office perusing the internet than when at home. So you know you all are doing more shopping online while at work than when off hours.

This morning we had a young woman call me that has been emailing me. She had to pick up the phone to go over the schedule. She whispered the whole conversation. I had turn up my headset to hear her. I asked if she was at work, she said that she had the day off. I found it so odd. Maybe that is just how she speaks but it certainly sounded like she was trying to whisper.

While going over all the do's and don't I asked if there were any children under a year or any cats. She said no, she lived alone. I go over all that was necessary to discuss, leaving out the kid and cat issues. The whole time I am thinking, why is she whispering if she lives alone? It was the oddest conversation. I imagined a hot hunk was still sleeping in her bed perchance? Or she was just damn weird. The latter is more likely but it was fun to imagine that a hunk-a-hunk-a burning love was nearby naked in bed sleeping. Hey, I need some fun at work too you know.

PBS Show

TGIF!! 😁

Have any of you seen the new Ann Curry show on PBS?
It is called We'll Meet Again.
I really like this show.

The first one was a woman who was Japanese American.
After the bombing of Hiroshima, Japanese Americans were sent to internment camps as you all know.
They were Americans. Hard to fathom now, isn't it?
She wanted to find her blue-eyed blonde friend who hid her, was her friend and helped her in her difficult times when they were children.

There was a Vietnamese woman who came to America to look for her father. That was a bit sad.

This week it was people who helped one another in one way or another during 9/11. They had a big impact on these 2 men during the commotion and turmoil and they never got to say thank you. But not a day goes by that they don't think of them and wonder where they are. The stories I have seen over the last 2 episodes have been powerful and well done.
I really enjoy this show.

But since I lived through that one (9/11) I can't shake it since I watched it last a few nights ago. Those 2 stories have stuck with me.

The show is on PBS on Tuesday nights at I believe 10p. I could be wrong. I have them DVR'd and that makes me never remember when they are on, so check your local listings as they say.

If you are a baby boomer we all remember where we were when Kennedy was shot and killed. I was in 2nd grade and it came over the PA system and my teacher began to cry. I remember it vividly.

9/11 was too close for comfort and you all know my story from that.
I thank God that I left NYC a day early but being here wasn't much better as I have shared.

It's funny how you can forget the daily things but those types of things leave such a deep imprint on your being. My mom's death was the same way.

Last evening I saw something on the news for a quick minute before I turned it off. It was the shooting at Virginia Tech. We were driving home from our lake house at the time. (near VA Tech) We saw all these police cars and ambulances and all kinds of helicopters etc as we were going down the highway. We had on a music station on Sirius and decided to turn on a local radio station to see what was going on. Sure enough, we heard all about it.

When Rick got to work on Monday, the girl being dragged out by her legs that was shown on every network channel was his boss and CEO's daughter. Crazy how everything during that time touched us in one way or another.
We moved here and it was in rapid succession, 9/11 (pentagon) anthrax in the mail so didn't get mail for a bit, beltway shooter killing random folks, and then this.
We kept feeling like we moved to the wrong area, the bullseye of everything bad. We used to have a plan. If we weren't together and something happens, meet at our lake house.
Far enough away to be safe we assumed.
We no longer have our vacation home so we need a new plan.
I think the way the world is going we better make one quickly.

Gee, this sure was an uplifting Friday post, wasn't it?
Okay, I will leave you with this. I am making this after work.
I love Twizzlers but they too are gluten, so this old celiac can't eat 'em.
I'll let you know how they turn out.

Thursday Throw Back

Since there are a lot of newbies here I thought I'd share something that I posted in 2009.

Enjoy your read.

Valentines Day

Happy Valentine's Day to all who celebrate this Hallmark Holiday.

Rick and I have never ever celebrated this holiday.
Normally we were working around the clock or we were in different cities from one another due to work.
I told him from day 1 that this "day" isn't for me.
He can just spoil me all the time. He laughed and said, I got it.
And he has.

So imagine my surprise when I got a heart shape of Godiva at 5am this morning.
He had it hiding in his truck. I said, "we don't do this made up holiday what the heck?"  He told me how he was at the store picking up beans for Izzy and saw this box of Godiva. He said he read the ingredients to be sure they were safe for me to eat (no gluten, barley and rye) and thought it would last me awhile and then I'd have no more questions at night.
That made me laugh.

You see some nights I will say, "do you have any chocolate hidden?"
And he will jump up and fetch me a small piece of something he got along the way and hid until I asked. That tickles me. I've seen him take a Hershey kiss out of his coat pocket, or run to his truck outside. Mostly though he hides them high up somewhere. I never see anything high.
The advantage Rick has being 6'1" and me being 5'1"
I don't bring chocolate into the house because I can't just eat one.
You can have potato chips and junk like that and I just don't care.
But chocolate? I will devour!  If this were an Olympic event I'd get the Gold - no competition baby!!!

Once over Halloween, they gave the adults picking up their dogs at daycare a small bag of mini chocolates. I did not pick up Izzy and that little bag lasted for months. I never knew that they even did this.
Each time I would say, "do you have something hidden?" He would go to a very high cabinet that I couldn't reach even on my step stool and he would give me one small piece of candy. I can't even tell you what a delight that is. A glass of red wine and a piece of chocolate is nirvana.

Last week while watching a movie he was eating a mug cake. I was having ice water. Whoo-ooh. I looked at him and said, "got any goodies hidden for me perhaps?" He did not. Damn.

So apparently when he saw this he thought it would last a long time.
But I know it's here. When he hides things he may have it for a month before I ask and I don't know he has it. Now knowing this is an issue.
In fact, as I am typing I am certain all those little bites of chocolate are screaming my name, begging me to go downstairs and eat them. I am trying really hard to not have any until this evening. But they seem to be persistent, 'Peggy, eat me, we are sweet and yummy just like you like'
I don't wish to be mean and ignore them. They are dressed so pretty just for me. I may have to visit that little box at lunch. I think I'll just smell them and tell them I'll be back after dinner.  Maybe....

The Big Bad Flu

Originally I was to drive north Thursday night after work for the weekend.
It is my fathers 90th. I just couldn't do it with one eye right now.
Rick couldn't go so I called my mother to tell her. She was very understanding thankfully.
Then I heard they had another snowfall. Honestly, they may never see pavement until June at this pace. They just hit a record of 152.1inches of snow. God love 'em I couldn't do that anymore.

I think my Dad's birthday party went off without a hitch. I called him and I told him who I was and then he did his, "Hey Peg!" as he has done on the phone with me for years. I asked how he was feeling, he said tired. He tells me that all the time. I guess if you live to be 90 you are exhausted huh?

I asked if he had a nice party and he said it was nice. I asked if he got a lot of sweets. (my father loves his sweets, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree) He said, I think so. So I could tell he was tired even though it was the middle of the day and he just wasn't as sharp as he can be. I told him I loved him and I would see him when it thaws. He laughed and said okay sweetheart and that was that.

Here is the birthday boy. I sure wish I could have been there but thankfully he won't remember it and when I see him I will bring him some dessert and we can celebrate then.

When I was very young, before my mom died, my mom would make desserts every Saturday. If there was one piece of pie left, heaven forbid someone get it and it not be my father. She made these awesome strawberry pasteries with a frosting. You know that powdered sugar and milk type frosting on a pastry. Similar to any round strawberry pastry you'd buy at a bakery. My father loved those with coffee in the morning. There was one left one Satruday morning and I knew not to even ask. Apparently my father saw me staring at it and he said, "want to share this with me?"  He poured us both a glass of milk and we sat at the table eating the last pastry. God how I loved my mom's baked goods.
When I got a new mom, she bought them. Not the same but that didn't stop me from eating her Entenmann's. 😛

Saturday Rick had to work. We are down a man and the new man doesn't start until March. So off to work he went. While bent over this guys tub he began to get nausous. Then he vomited in the bathtub. Great. Thank God he is alone and he could clean up the room.   He said after that he was in a fog. He told me it felt like he was hit with a strong wave and now he was sick and really sick. He said he barely remembers doing the bathtub. He and the man looked everything over. The customer gave him his credit card. He swiped in through the phone and the man looked it over and signed it.

Thankfully we have a notification on the app to notify of a purchase over a certain amount. I got the notification on my phone. I ran upstairs to the office and saw that the man was charge $5,355.00 too much. Oops. I immediately called Rick. He was outside standing by his van vomiting. So neither the customer or Rick noticed. I immedateliy refunded the customer the proper amount.

In the mean time Rick is heading to the ER by our home. I told him I'd meet him there. I called the customer and explained that I got a notification that he was over charged. He said I didn't notice are you sure? I have already refunded it less the amount you actually do owe. I sent a receipt via email as well as on your phone. I also sent a copy of what Square sends us about the refund. He again repeats that he did not notice am I sure. I say, I am certain.

I explained to him that we never got the money so this should be a quick refund for  you but since Monday is a bank holiday it may take an extra day. Square must tell us that it will take 2 - 7 business days. In our experience it is much faster, but again you should speak to your bank.  He thanked me and I thought that was the end of that topic.

I met Rick at the ER. He indeed has the flu. He was given tamiflu. Boy that hit him quickly. He was fine when he left for work. And yes, he and I both have had the flu shot. Because of his kidney disease he can't be on this for the normal length of time. The dosage would be adjusted for him. They recommended that I begin it immediatleyas well. Great.

Rick went home and I ran to the pharmacy to fill his Rx's and get him some ginger ale. I dropped the dog at my neighbors while I was at the hospital. I picked her up on the way home and brought Rick all his drugs to begin.

I then went to the office and felt I should let this family know that Rick has the flu. They were freaking about the paint in the house for their 18 month old. Every conversation was "the baaaby"  I discussed this with the doctor at the hospital. He said it would be good if I did let them know he was exposed to the flu. Yea, that is what I thought I should do I just dreaded doing it. They were such pain in the asses. But I should do what I would want someone to do for me. So I made the call.

I indicated that Rick began to feel sick at their home so he went to the ER. He does indeed have the flu and we felt we should alert you so if you wish to call your doctor and deal with this accordingly. Nary a thank you, gee that was nice, just 'When are we getting refunded?'
Oh for the love of God. No good deed goes unpunished.

I wanted to scream, hey you big dufus, you signed a document saying that was the right amount. It is 50% your fault. But instead I only state what I told him the first 5 times about being refunded. I repeat calling his doctor and I apologize for the 100th time.

Then his wife calls back. ABOUT THE BAAAABY.
(reminds me of The Seinfeld show)
I repeat the same things for the 101st time. Then she says, I am moving out. Okay you do that dip shit, move out. For the love of God the baby was not in the house and came back 2 hrs later. I give her all the technical information that should explain this to her. I explain it both ways, technically and dumbed down. The particals that would be an issue have been professional ventilated and even paint on your walls would linger longer. I listen to her rattle baby shit off. Then when she stopped I thanked her for her business and hung up.

Now get this, Rick told me they were smokers. So apparently carcigons are fine for the baby to inhale just not these fumes. Yes, I am shaking my head as I type this. I don't understand smokers and their concern for their lung safety and yet they smoke. Do they not see the stupidity of it all?

This morning I came in to the office to a voice mail from the man who signed the receipt asking when he would see a refund on his card.

I did not call him back. I sent him another copy of his refund receipt to his email, his text and a copy of what square sends us. I also stated in the email to call his bank regarding his cards refund policy.

I seriously doubt it will even hit his card. It was in a pending mode when it was caught. But who the hell knows. I am certain I will hear from him every friggin' day until he sees it. Nothing has been said about the flu so apparently that didn't bother them one bit, just being refunded. Which I understand, I too would want to be refunded but how many times much you ask me and see the refund receipt?

Yea, it was a great weekend. Rick slept away most of it. When awake he downed juice, ginger ale, soup and last night ate a grilled cheese. He slept the better part of Saturday afternoon and evening and most of Sunday. He awoke today to being quite chipper and feeling good.
He went to work. He is working alone in a home that is empty today. We figured that would be fine to do. The other jobs were rescheduled with some free things thrown in for the inconveniece. But as soon as you say the flu everyone has been nice about this.

I began to feel crappy Saturday night and wondered if it was all in my head or I was really getting sick. I wasn't going to take the tamiflu until Sunday morning but I decided to start it Saturday night when I started to feel awful. I am fine and it looks like Rick will be too.
The hospital said he caught it so quickly and got on tamiflu right away plus having the flu shot would make this short.
I guess he was right. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Wednesday Meme's

Oh, of course, this is true.😉

Can you even imagine? How nice!!

This made me laugh out loud.
Or if like me as a kid, turn them on when your sister is trying to lick them.

 Shh...don't tell my husband this.

This is so very true for me.

Tee Hee

Hmm....

Ah, c'mon. Just because.

Grab The Box of Kleenex

If you haven't cried since Sunday's episode of This is Us, you're in luck, a new episode is on again tonight. Clear those tear ducts, grab your box of kleenex and sit back and enjoy!

I was looking on Netflix for some old movies that I loved and hoped to see again.
But they weren't there. I then went to Amazon and found them. But only on DVD.

Why don't they stream them? Everything older I wish to see is on DVD.
I don't want to buy DVD's even if I did have an old DVD player.
If they are a streaming service then why isn't their library able to stream them?
I do not understand this DVD necessity. I don't even know anyone who still has a DVD player. Isn't that why Blockbuster video went out of business?

Speaking of which, I just saw a meme where a woman was carded buying wine and they asked for her ID. She put her keys on the counter to get into her purse and the young man saw her key ring with her blockbuster card on it and said, "never mind I see the blockbuster card, you're old enough" I digress.

Oh well so much for seeing these oldies but goodies again I guess.
Rick has never seen these 2 movies and I was hoping we'd watch them this weekend. (if I can get him away from Longmire for a damn minute)

The Four Seasons and Same Time Next Year are the two movies.
Both have Alan Alda. The Four Seasons just makes me laugh to think about it.
I just loved the characters Danny (Jack Weston)and Claudia (Rita Moreno)
Carol Burnett is in this as well as many others you'd recognize.
This movie came out in the very early 80's if I recall.
At the time we had a group who did this type of thing together all the time.
Then a divorce happened and who gets the friends? Yep, lived that a few years later just like in the movie. While it was happening to me I recalled it all from the movie.

The other movie I saw originally at the Drive-In. Remember those?
Same Time Next Year was a movie from the late 70's.
It too had Alan Alda and it starred Ellen Burstyn. I loved this movie!
Ah, another time, when movies were about people and they talked and nothing blew up and you didn't need a blue screen. I'm so old-fashioned aren't I?

Have you seen either?
