People Are Strange

Yes, that title is a song by Jim Morrison and The Doors.
All you old rock 'n rollers know this I would suspect.

I went to Costco the other day to pick up some big ass cans of green beans for Izzy. Every single time someone who is checking me out says, "wow you really like green beans." The closer to Thanksgiving they will say, "Oh making green bean casserole for the holidays?"  Now I just don't say anything about my dog. Let them think whatever they wish.  Yes, I used to say, No my dog eats these in place of a 1/2 cup of food for her diet" But I don't bother anymore. The last time I said that our vet has her on a diet the cashier said, "Oh you privileged white people and your dogs." (she was Hispanic)

This week while at Costco I was unloading my cart onto the belt.
I had my card in my hand but needed both hands and put it in my mouth as I used two hands to grab something to put on the belt.  Then I took it out and put it on the first item so the cashier could have my card to scan.

It was now my turn and she said, "please pick up your card"
I must have given her a puzzled look and she said, "you just had that in your mouth I am not touching it."
Oh my goodness, she's right, so I apologize and pick it up for her to scan. I was thinking as I held it she would scan it. BUT SHE GRABBED IT.
What was the point of that? I did not ask. I didn't care enough.
The bubble over my head was shaking its head.

As she was ringing up my beans and assorted items she said to me, "look she's got it in her mouth too" about the woman behind me. I turn to look behind me and I nod. I mean what am I going to say?

I understand her asking me to pick this up. I really do.
I don't blame her one bit. That is gross if it was in my mouth.
But then she grabbed it and scanned it anyway.

I wanted to stand there and wait to see what she said to the woman behind me but it would have been so obvious if I just stood there. But I was very curious.
Did she make her pick up her card and then touch it anyway?

People are funny.

"Oh you privileged white people and your dogs." Wow, I would have been speechless if a clerk said that to me. And thanks for reminding me about canned beans. I usually buy them frozen or fresh for Levi but canned would be so much easier to mix with kibble.

Clerks need to keep wipes at their stations. Cash money is full of germs, more than a credit card you've had in your mouth and just because she saw you do it, doesn't mean that every other credit card she handles hasn't been in a mouth a few times. It's common.

Guess I'm a "privileged white people and your dog"!

What's funny is in her head she was thinking it was it your mouth but it's ok to handle it after you picked it up because you took all the germs off it!

Jean, you know I have never seen that cashier ever again and I go to the same Costco and I go a lot! She may have been sick of we white privilaged people and their dogs. I just laughed when she said it. I think I just considered the source. Purell and wipes - they sell them at Costco in bulk - she needed to pick up a few.

April, exactly! :-)

Wow. Privileged white people, huh?
I know I wouldn't say it, but I'm imagining inviting someone who felt okay about that comment to kiss my ass.

I deal with spit on a daily basis. One reason I don't allow kids balloons... they blow it up then hand it to me wanting me to tie it. HELL NO.

The really fun thing is tying shoelaces when it's not raining outside and finding them damp. Especially BOY shoelaces.

I wash my hands a lot.

Ha, that's such a funny image, "EW, pick it up" and then grab it anyway.
I used to volunteer at the middle school library. A kid once tried to check out a book after having his library card in his mouth. He got the what for from the librarian.
"privileged white people and your dogs"?? wtf??

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Ami, eww, the wet shoelaces. Yep I wash my hands a lot more than most. I have since a little girl. I just like my hands to feel clean. Rick laughs at me. So I understand the woman the other day I really do but I wanted to laugh when she touched it anyway.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Abby, I don't usually do that with things in my mouth but for whatever reason I did that day. I can't imagine how gross the books are that we take from the library. I mean if we spent time thinking about it everything we touch has been touched before. But what I did do was wrong. I guess that Hispanic cashier thought since coming to this country she is shocked by how we white folks treat our dogs like family. I get her remark too, but it could have been said in a nicer way. I just smiled and that bubble appeared over head. :-)

Privileged white people!! Maybe canned beans are cheaper than dog food, especially if you're buying Blue Buffalo or Iams or something! Hmm?

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Brian, she is on this new metabolic and mobility Rx food. OMG it is almost $90 a month. The first bag was from vet and it was over $100. I go through Chewy now. But Painful. But it is working for her mobility and weight so there is that. I substitute some with green beans. Low in calories and makes my money go further as well. She thinks the beans are awesome so win-win. It about the same I guess as Blue Buffalo.
Hey I see Erie and Buffalo are about to get hammered with lake effect - you getting that up your way?

The cashiers at Shop Rite sometimes are less than polite. I always have a good experience with Costco cashiers, checkers and in general all their workers. I think it has something to do with decent wages and benefits.

I agree Joeh. I have a friend who moved from Oregon to NC. She got a job at Costco and loves it. Benefits and a good working environment. When her kid had emergency surgery she said they were so accommodating and she never felt like her job was in jeopardy. How nice and rare! While I live in a snotty area (DC Metro baby) this woman I have never seen before or after. I wonder if she didn't last. I know most of the cashiers I go so often. Pitiful really isn't it?

From a recent study...
Conclusion
In conclusion, in a nationwide population-based study with 12 years of follow-up, we show that dog ownership is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease in single households and with a reduced risk of cardiovascular and all-cause death in the general population.

Mike, so what you're saying is my privilege white ass is going to outlive her. :-) I'll read this link this evening. Thanks.

Yes. I did start singing. I feel like a walking germ factory after I go shopping anywhere. I guess I see her point but she comes in contact with so many things that have been handled by so many. At least you didn't have them under your arm on a hot, sweaty day!

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Barbara, I am thrilled that you sang it. :-)
It is odd since she has no idea when she grabs my money or debit card where my hands have been. Those types of things have never bothered me until recently. I may have to write about it but I am still wrapping my head around this. In good news, my state went blue after yesterdays election. Yippee!

Olga said...

Well, obviously the cooties from your mouth immediately transfer to your hands. Once you picked up the card all the germs were back on you so she should grab the card with now worries. That's my theory.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Olga, that is perfect!

Next time someone questions your green beans, tell them you want to plant them to grow your own crop.

They definitely won't want to touch your card.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

bluzdude, too funny. Sadly some may think that's possible.

Grrrrrr! My best buddy was as State Disability Office filling out papers for her adult but disable daughter. There were lots of papers to go through and she lick her finger to catch the next one. The worker looked at her, stone faced and said, "Don't do that". My girl was baffled, not knowing she had "done" anything. "Don't lick your finger" she says.

Couple of things.....
1. REALLY?
2. Do they imagine the rest of the world is actually sanitary?
3. Restaurant workers???????? Im sure they never scratch themselves or sneeze, or sweat....have you seen kitchen workers sweat?
4. Snot nosed children put their mouths and hands everywhere.

Just my opinion but germs are everywhere and while I agree that I would rather not pick up something that has been in someones mouth. That someone's HANDS have been doing things they don't even want to think of.

Best practice, Wash you own hands a bunch and don't put your hands in your mouth, eyes or any other orifice until you do.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Linda I agree completely. I have never been someone who uses purell because I think we need some germs for our body to learn to fight them. Since a child I don't like dirty hands or feeling like they are. So I tend to wash my hands a million times a day. Yes, Rick makes fun of me but it doesn't hurt. But lately, with Rick working in peoples homes he brings home creeping crud all the time. He takes a Silkwood shower immediately but....He has brought home some damn gross things and colds etc.

Our cards are all ready dirty from all the swipie gadgets they have been dragged through. You surely got more germs in your mouth from the card than you would have deposited on the card. It's just that kind of world we live in and like you say, if we don't expose ourselves a bit, our immune systems can't get strong.
