I am not proud of myself.
I acted like a Karen.
I just left the doctor's office after the annual Medicare checkup.
Rick asked me to pick up some Dr. Pepper for him.
I stopped at Walmart since I was driving by.
I picked up a few things, and the pop was so heavy.
Now, that sounds crazy, but with my 2 shoulders barking, it was difficult.
Reaching, lifting, basically just using my arms, is painful in every way.
On a scale of 1 to 10, my right arm/shoulder, which is the one that they wish to replace, is a 12 on the pain scale. My left is a 6 or 7, just to give you an idea.
I got the pop into the cart and moved it to an upright position so the barcode would be facing the cashier.
I did this so I wouldn't have to pick it up again.
Doing it this way, the cashier could just scan it as they normally do with bigger items.
I put all my things on the conveyor belt.
I caught the cashier's eye, and I said, "Hello."
She looked away and didn't say a word.
I moved the cart so she could reach it easily, and I asked, "Can you scan it from here?" Knowing full well, they do this for us all the time for big items.
She never smiled. She stared at me and asked me if my arms were broken.
Oh no, she didn't!
Now I am in a lot of pain, and I'm exhausted because I can't sleep with the pain.
I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes.
I said, "No, they are not, but I have a medical issue. I'm sorry, I thought this was part of your job."
She said Nope, emphatically.
I picked it up for her, and she stood there with her hand on her hip, staring at me.
She slowly scanned it and never said thx.
I said, "You're welcome."
She said, "I didn't say thank you." I replied, "I know."
When I was about to leave, she threw the receipt at me.
I caught it and said, "Thank you for the great customer service today, ma'am, have yourself a great day!" All while smiling, and I know it sounded sincere and not sarcastic. I was trying not to be a snot. She looked perplexed.
I admit I giggled inside seeing that look on her face.
She knew she did not deserve it, but by God, I was not going to stoop to her level.
I then just stood for a minute by the customer service desk, thinking I should walk over to the manager. But I didn't take my Karen behavior to that level; I just left.
When I told Rick, he asked who I was, then put his hand on my forehead as if I had a fever. He said, "About time you say something back to that kind of behavior, but you should have gone to the manager."
Ah, it wouldn't have done anything anyway.
I'm not proud of myself for doing any of this, but man, oh man, was this woman awful.
Rick asked if it felt good. No, no, it didn't, honestly.
He'd better enjoy that damn pop. 😝

I'm not sure if I should leave it here, but there is a customer service hotline you can call. I would certainly call and complain because that was rude and unacceptable. If she hates her job that much, she needs to get another away from people.
Some times you just have to take the low road.
That would have hacked me off. I'm trying to decide if I would have made a scene. (I kinda think I would!)
How about "I'm not going to pick it up so if you're not going to scan it I guess it's free".
Our stores here have signs, "leave heavy items in the cart, we'll scan them".
Soda.
Pop. Ooh, I've never seen a sign like that! Gee i wish I had thought of that to say to her (free)
It would have felt good😇
Ah yes I suppose so.
Well i think I will look for that number. I did not catch her name but her terminal, the time etc is on my receipt. I'll keep you posted.
Oh, I sure as hell would have complained to a manager about that level of rude service. There was no call for her to say any of those things to you.
Wow ! - I tried to think of the last time I encountered a rude 'customer service' person - and only 2 instances in the last 30 years came to mind - And while I maintained my composure, yes, I complained to the authorities about it.
It is constant here Grace. Both of us are shocked at how rude people are here. No such thing HERE of southern hospitality. Stronger the accent, the worse the are.
Well I found an online compliant firm on walmart site. They asked for the ID# on my receipt as well as some other items like terminal address, time, etc. I wrote what happened. They asked if they could call me. I said certainly,so we shall see. But why do I feel guilty Deb?
I work in retail, and believe me, it's usually the other way around. Good for you for staying calm, that's what I do with toxic customers, and yes, they often look confused. They want drama and this girl does not do drama.
That's the kind of thing I'd have let go when I was younger, not wanting to make a scene, but the Older and Crankier me would have given her an earful.
How rude. I swear people have no customer service skills anymore.
You know what's funny? While in my corporate position, I also taught at a school in the travel industry. I taught customer service skills. And here I was being snarky. Not proud. But like you, I don't do drama.
Oh Tony, so so true. I used to be far more tolerant of these twits 🤣
You got that right
Were I in charge of managing staff, I'd want to know if there were a rude bitch putting our customers off. There is nothing Karen about reporting it; customers have a right, if they're polite themselves, to be treated with courtesy.
By the way, one of my two darling sisters is named Karen and she's the kindest most sensible person I know. Is it possible she's the only decent Karen? LOL -Kate
That's completely unacceptable. You weren't being a Karen, come on. I can't believe she made you pick up those dang sodas so she could scan them. I hope you made note of her name, and let management know, because they really don't want a bitch like that "helping" customers. You'll be doing everyone a favor. I hope she gets fired.
By the way, Ms Peggy, you didn't act at all like a "Karen!" -Kate
Whaaat?! That cashier's got issues and shouldn't be facing the public.
