Friday

I have had a helluva work week.
I am happy it is Friday.

I have a cousin, Betsy, coming in for work and she is stopping by this weekend.
I will be discussing this with her tonight after work. She is the 3rd child (out of 5) of my Uncle Angelo. I have mentioned him here many many times. He was such a big part of my life, almost as much as my Dad. They were both joined at the hips anyway.

She flies in on Saturday so not sure of the times and if she wants to come out on Sat or Sun or both. I am happy with both. Low maintenance family with giggles and stories and love. I can't wait. People who eat what I eat and won't flip out on something spicy. Someone you have a shorthand with when you talk. It's all like a blanket of comfort.

Here is a photo of us at the age of 14 and 13. I was 14.
I still can not believe my new mom let me put tape on the wall to hang my peace poster. So unlike her. But then again she was new to our home and she was probably picking her battles then. (she got over that quickly.)  I remember that shirt because it was a bit too large but I insisted on buying that size so no one could see my boobs. I was a funny dorky thing.
This below is us at the kid's table on any given Sunday.
This was at my home where I grew up.
This was my Dad's one brother's kids and one sister's kids and his own.
Dad is the youngest of 8.

The youngest one in this photo is now 54.  One was killed in an auto accident and one has Parkinson's. We are all scattered across the globe now but back in the day we spent all our time together. We spent every Sunday together growing up and when you came home to visit on weekends from college you knew on Sunday we would all be together.  You never left to go back to school before mealtime. Hey none of us were going to pass up a good meal.

Betsy is the blonde on the bottom far left not smiling.
The older cousins got to sit at the adult table and at this time I was considered an adult which is humorous since that smiley boy on the left is only 2 yrs younger than me. (Frankie always looks like this - even today - always a smile!!) I can't say his name without smiling. Put him and Rick together and you will laugh for hours. I love these goofy people.

I was supposed to be purging this weekend for upcoming rug installations. I have a couple of big walk-in closets in guest rooms that need to be purged.
I use these closets as storage not having a basement or attic.
I normally purge my home at each move when I was moving every 3 years for a while there. So I did not gather a lot of things.
But I've lived here now 20 yrs. January 15th of this year was 20 yrs.
I have never lived this long anywhere.
I moved out of my parent's home at 19. Although I did live in my hometown a bit longer, but not by much.
It's time to move again so with the rugs happening it's a good time to get motivated. Abby was so good at her purging but she won't come help.
I asked her you see, I even tried guilt.
Abby is strong!

Last time Betsy was here her daughter took this selfie of us.
I am closing my eyes due to the sun.
She made me take off my sunglasses.
And something you didn't probably know about me, I am highly sensitive to sunlight. So I am squinting here. Betsy on the left, her daughter in the middle and squinty eyes on the right. (The older one with the gray hair in the front. I'm always the old one in the photo)

So it looks like I won't be doing as much purging as I thought.
More like fun with Betsy.
Good trade-off if you ask me.

What a fabulous way to start my Friyay and I thank you so much! Big smiles make me smile, and to know that you can hang out with a spicy food loving cousin is even better. I promise the next time I visit my brother in DC, we'll have to hook up for a cheeseburger and lemonade and some laughs. Sounds like your weekend is going to be the best ever! Hugs, RO

Purging will always be there. Have a fun weekend. I do miss those big cousin get togethers.

We always laugh about the children's table. Depending on whose house we are at and which siblings with kids are attending, sometimes my 40 yo kids are at the children's table. The grandson (20) always teases that he never gets to sit at the big table.

Barbara my sister always said that! sadly it was true.

I'm a menopause baby so my 'cousins' were my nieces and nephews. Good times at the kids' table, lol. I have a niece who's 2 years older than I am.

Whole Lotta - wow a niece 2 yrs older. So you were most certainly a happy surprise. :-) I have a lot of 1st cousins, but nothing as exciting as you. Although my younger sister is 17 yrs younger than me. Everyone thinks she is my child. I used to explain, no my mom died, new family. But then I just let them think I was her mom. We knew strangers didn't need to know any more than that.

You're going to have such a good time this weekend. I am envious. Few things are better than reminiscing with people you've known and liked all your life.

Jean, you are spot on my friend!

So envy you all those cousins. I had 2 that I rarely saw. Never had to do the kids table and can see how promotion would be a big deal but you probably missed the fun with the kids. Adult conversation can be boring to a youngster.
Enjoy this week end. Laugh lots.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Patti, yes the promotion was great until you had to sit at the adult table. Everything you said was correct. I always wanted to be with my cousins. I had 28 1st cousins I believe. You know those crazy Italian Catholics and birth control. I am surprised there were not more. I made the change - no children. AND YET THEY SILL ASKED ME!!!

I wish I would have had cousins close to my age. I was the baby on one side and the oldest on the other with like 7 years between me and the next closest age either way.

Julie, c'mon over and have some cousin fun. Hey, our family and extended family bred like rabbits.

I have cousins here in St. Louis and I hardly ever see them. Unless my sister puts a get-together together, I may never see them again.

We've been in our house for 43 years. I've been in St. Louis for 73 years.

Here's an idea. Drive back and when you come through St. Louis we'll go look at that house I sent you.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Mike - if I ever got to St Louis you can bet I'd bother you and Claudia and take a home tour.

Take the weekend off and have fun with your family. Then tell us all about it...I miss being in Maine when all my family lived there. Each year we had a family reunion (1st Sunday of August) and those reunions were memorable. When we were kids, we'd steal booze from the adults and then go to my cousin's treehouse and drink it. It's a wonder we didn't fall out of the tree. They still have the reunions, but it's been a very long time since I attended one. Anyway, have fun and get back to the grind another day. All that purging will still be right there waiting for you after the weekend.

Have fun with Betsy, I'm sure you have lots of good times to reminisce! Cute pics of you - even though you half-cropped yourself out of the most recent.
I didn't have cousins growing up (Dad was an only child, Mom's family was all in the Philippines) and was always a bit jealous of those who did.
On another side note, I had no boobs to hide when I was 14. At 55, I'm still waiting...
