I did the unthinkable - I cleaned out my closet.
When things seem overwhelming to me, I tend to procrastinate.
But I finally sucked it up and dove into my closet.
It only took 2 days. Saturday and Sunday were closets all day each day.
(new flooring too, but that was the easy part)
At one point yesterday Rick came upstairs and checked on me.
He found me lying on the floor.
Rick told me that I would get done much sooner if I didn't take floor naps.
I wasn't napping, I was giving myself a break.
Figures he'd walk in at that moment in time so he could bust my chops.
Everything came out of my closet and clothes went on the bed.
Shoes were all over the bedroom as well.
I went through them all.
I do have a lot of shoes. I admit it.
Most need to go. I am no longer wearing 4-inch heels.
I no longer have a job that requires that type of shoe wear.
At this moment in time, I am barefoot at my desk.
For a woman with tons of shoes, you'd think I would wear them more.
Shh....don't point this out to my Big Guy.
Once Rick said to me, "how many black pairs of shoes do you need Margaret?"
I responded with, "how many fishing lures do you need Rick?"
His reply was a laughing "Touché"
I currently have 9 drawers. 5 in my dresser I share with Rick in the bedroom and 4 in my closet where I have another dresser. I still do not have enough drawers. So I move summer T-shirts to a Rubbermaid bin. Then move those to drawers in summer and move sweaters to my rubber maid bin. I need drawers and places for shoes, more than hanging space.
What I really need is to have a custom walk-in closet instead of just a walk in closet. But I can't afford one so I have to do what I can do.
After hearing all this you'd think I would have a great wardrobe.
But I do not.
More like a retail store. Sizes 8 to 20.
I finally got rid of the fat clothes from my days of being sick but for some reason kept a couple of things. Now, that was just silly. Yes, they are beautiful but I'm never going to wear them. They can't be altered I tried. They are just gorgeous and expensive and I don't even wear fancy shit like that anymore.
But if I were being honest it all just reminds me of a time when I was so very sick which made me so heavy and miserable. I hid inside my home and surely wasn't living my life, working, traveling for work and being sick was my whole life. So there is that part of it too.
So no longer ill, no need for those big clothes.
We just keep the chubby clothes. :-)
So they went into a pile for Dress for Success or other donation places.
Then there was the pile of just toss 'em.
Why keep that sweater with the stain you can't remove and you won't wear? Taking up space - toss it.
I must admit it felt so good to purge.
I let go of everything I have not worn in 2 years.
I have a lot of shoes. But only 2 pairs of shoes that I can't ever wear.
One is a cute sandal but too flat, they hurt my feet. Wore them once inside my house for the day and hated them. Never even wore them outside.
The other is a bootie with a 4-inch heal that I can no longer wear because I no longer will wear painful shoes just because they are cute.
I have a friend coming to visit from Orange County California in 2 weeks.
She and I wear the same size shoe and her last visit she took some of my heels.
She's younger than me and still wears big heels. I'd love to get them reheeled if there is such a thing. They are just so damn cute but it's just the heel. If it were high and a chunky heel - great, I wear those.
But I don't think they can do that, can they?
I have a window in my closet which faces the front of my house.
Isn't that a dumb thing to put in a big closet?
I sprayed that stuff that makes your windows look frosted.
It did exactly what I needed it to do.
I kept the blinds on the window but this frost is helpful.
Because I had a dresser in front of the window the bottom half wasn't done. So yesterday I frosted the complete window.
I get dressed in my closet and honestly having a window is so weird to me.
I used this stuff on my sidelights on my front door because I kept seeing people peek into our sidelights when they rang the bell. I guess that is human nature but it's creepy to me. So I frosted them. My neighbor liked the idea and did hers when she saw mine. It really is easy to do and comes off like a charm with some acetone.
Well, I digressed, see why it took me so long to do my closet.
I tried things on, I made piles, I found things I forgot about.
But lo and behold I now have a neat, clean, somewhat organized closet.
Now we have to tackle Rick's closet. I would love to do it myself because it will get done. But we'll have to do this together. He is another person with a lot of shoes. Yet he wears the same ones all the time.
Back in the day of our corporate days, we had his walk-in closet done by a professional. He just needs to thin out the clothes that he never wears.
My goal is to do this to Rick's closet, a 3rd-floor closet, and my pantry before spring. I think I can do this. I'm lucky to have 2 walk-in closets in the master is what I have learned. I don't want to share a closet when we move and that is going to be very difficult to find. I love our place I just wish it were 1 floor, a bigger laundry room, a bigger pantry and I could park in front of my house.
Then I could live here until I die.
Now if it were a self-cleaning house then I'd never leave even if I had to crawl up the stairs. Wouldn't that be the perfect house?
A self cleaning home for sale. I think it would sell in a heart beat even if awful inside.
Someone told me to watch the new Netflix special on organization.
I will not. I'll save that for the wealthy. The cost invested in all the things those folks make you buy to store your things is more than I wish to spend.
It cost my friend just shy of $500 in containers and God knows how much she paid for the organizational person who came to her home to help her. I was afraid to ask. But I know this was not cheap. In her defense, her home is very organized and most in her family have done what they need to do to keep it that way.
I don't have that kind of money anymore so you'll see me doing this myself, I can afford my fee. I'm cheap, just a procrastinator. 😛

I am still struggling to clean my walk-in closet which was on my New Year's Resolution list. I worked an hour, got a bag of clothing out and quit. I need to take a page out of your book and take everything out and load up the bed. I'm not a shoe person but this morning I discovered I have 8 red turtle neck shirts and guess what, none of them match the plaid shirt I wanted to wear it with. How do I get rid of any of those red shirts?
If you ever decide to get rid of the window in your closet, give it to me. The natural light would be welcome for matching colors. But I'm sure the architect needed a window there to balance something else at the front of the house. Love the idea of the frosting though.
Jean, I would have loved it if Rick had stayed up there and kept me company while I did it. Or one of my fun sister who would have a glass of wine and watch and kibitz with me while I work. But being in the closet all day was not fun. He would come to check on me but never stayed long, I think he feared I'd put him to work. I'd give you my window if I could. And yes, the window does look aesthetically correct, just weird in my closet. How do you get rid of those red shirts? Donations? Sell them? We have an online neighborhood thing where others sell clothing and other items. You could do that. Good luck!
Great job with the closet purge! It's weird how stuff can just accumulate until you realize you have to take floor breaks while cleaning it out.
I did a bit of that myself last week, but I have a smallish closet which helps. I even managed to get the husband to donate a few things like those old-man-going-to-church-gloves I've NEVER seen him wear in 30 years.
Abby, my crazy has husband has dockers with pleats. Hello, the 80s are over!!
He knows they are dated and doesnt wear them. Well, they don't fit, so let the purge begin...he can lau on the floor this time. 😋
I think you should put all your shoes in a big pile, take a picture to put on your blog, and then let us judge you. You know, just for fun.
It took me a really long time to clear out all the corporate clothes. I then realized I was short of nice casual clothes. I had laying on the couch for night but nothing between work and bed. Eventually I got my everyday wardrobe bought and organized. Right now my closet is looking pretty good, but then I moved a couple of months ago so maybe that shouldn't count. A lot of things can sneak into your drawers and closets over the years - and none of them is the mate to the sock you lost in the washing machine.
Barbara, You are too funny. But it's true about the socks! Moving does help, doesn't it? I was moving with one or both of our careers at any given time and moving helps purge. This is the longest place I have lived in my life. It's been 19 yrs in this house. I only lived with my parents for 19 yrs. So I have accumulated too much stuff. You are so funny, that is so true about the socks.
I just did the same thing! I was saving so many clothes in case I ever fit into them again! Cra cra! I got rid of about three huge lawn bags of cloths and it feels so light!!! LOVE it!
Ann, I figured if I do get that large again I will just buy new clothes. :-)But pray that never happens again.
You have inspired me. My closet is the size of a small out house and I have no idea how the couple before me managed. Still even though packed, it should be a peice of cake to organize. Thanks for the inspiration.
I will have to confess -- cleaning out closets and drawers is my favorite household task. It's a sickness. Back when we used to rent a place in Florida for winter, within the first two days of arrival I would take everything out to the linen closet and refold all the sheets and towels
Olga, damn if I had known I'd have paid you to do this. I don't enjoy it but boy it feels good when it's done. There are worse things, like cleaning the bathroom.
