Because I am always up in the wee hours of the morning wishing I could sleep I tend to turn nonsense on TV and try to get sleepy. Many years ago during an episode of insomnia, I watched a comedian on Netflix.
He talked like my cousin, Joey D.
Yes, he went by D. instead of his full last name.
Everyone in town knew Joey D. His bar was called Joey D's.
He is a caricature of that east coast Italian American and when I was younger he embarrassed me. Now I find him funny and I can laugh about my extended family.
This comedian had a Netflix special in I think it was 2014.
I laughed a lot while alone at 2am with this guy.
He talked about his family and I could so relate.
The school lunches where no one will trade with you.
The father that never rewards you or compliments you.
The father and mother with this very strong work ethic who can't understand if you are 9 why you aren't working. That the majority of our food came from our garden and my Uncles garden and family members traded items. Yeah, he grew up the same way I did but he makes it so damn funny.
After that evening of watching this in 2014, I told Rick about him.
He watched a few minutes, less than 5 and fell asleep. But before he did he said to me, "you like this guy?" He never watched it again.
Then a week or two ago he listened to an interview with this comedian on Sirius radio. He came home telling me about Sebastian Maniscalco.
How funny this guy is. Rick tells me he gets our family, Margaret, we have to watch his special.
(Rick was adopted by an Italian American family so thank God he understands mine. no explanations necessary.)
So we watched his new Netflix special and of course, laughed.
I don't think he would play well in middle America, even though he is from middle America (Chicago) But I could be wrong.

Lol, I saw this on FB not too long ago ~ so funny & true! Only now I have a Ring doorbell, so I know who's there, and can talk to them before I ever open the door! That is if they can hear me over the frantic barking of the dog. :-)

My dog doesn't bark at the door bell. Only if you wake her.
It's funny because she scares the work men who come inside because they don't know there is a dog here. I love that!
I've seen this before and it's so funny because it's so true. I'm not Italian by descent, but a big chunk of the town where I grew up is, so these were "my people". Go get some sleep, Margaret :)
Abby that is what my husband says. I spent way too many years being embarrassed by my family. I was afraid to have him come to my home one Sunday when he asked. I had to warn him, it will be loud, everyone talking at once, food and booze everywhere, it sounds like fighting but its not.
His response was, "I was raised by Italians" Like it was a pack of wolves. But it was helpful he understands.
Times sure have changed. Company use to be welcome. I remember as a teen at night we use to drive up in a random driveway, flick off the lights, slam the car doors without getting out and watch the inhabitants running around straightening up the house, then we would pull out of the drive. I know--mean.

Ann, oh he thinks he's hilarious now. But that first night he didn't and fell asleep. He even said after we watched his brand new netflix special, "Why did I not think he was funny? What the hell was wrong with me?" That to me is a loaded question. We both loved his new special.
