I wish it were mine.
We shovel and salt our stoop and sidewalk as well as the neighbor on both sides.
They do not shovel or salt and we do it so WE do not fall when out with Izzy, not for them. They are in their 20's and the ones on our left in their 30's. The 60-year-olds are doing it instead. What is wrong with this picture?
I have yak traks but did not put them on yesterday.
They fit over your shoe or boot to help you on ice.
They look like this. They work very well.
I did not wear them yesterday, honestly never occurred to me. Very stupid.
Now I was wearing layers and layers of clothes. I felt like the Michelin man. I could barely get my arms down at my sides with all the fabric in the arms of my coat. I only cared about warmth.
We were about 15 blocks from home, we were heading back towards our home.
We rounded a corner and the wind caught me just so and I put my head down to shield my face and at the same time I slipped on the ice. I was so concerned about falling on my back (several surgeries) so I twisted and went down on my hip and tucked and rolled. Izzy was not on the leash, she was ahead of me.
She turned to look for me and came back to me. I slowly got up and brushed myself off. I felt like I had the wind knocked out of me so I laid there for a second to get a full breath. I saw 2 men across the street brushing off their cars, both watched me fall, both said nothing. It kind of pissed me off.
As I got up I looked at them. Both still just staring at me. No one asked, Are you okay? As I rubbed Izzy who was all over me acting concerned I let her know I was okay so she began to walk towards home. The 2 men were back to brushing snow off their car. Being a bitch, I wanted to say, "Hey I'm okay thanks for asking" But bitch Peg stayed inside and Margaret walked home in silence.
I don't know why it affected me like this but the closer to home I got the angrier I got. If I saw a kid fall, a woman, a man, old or young. I would have at the very least said, "Are you okay?" Especially as I laid there catching my breath after having the wind knocked out of me. I know I would have walked the 8 ft to see if the person was okay and talk to them. But no one did anything.
I realize I am not real old. I am 62. So I suppose they thought she's not 80 so she's fine. But don't you think most people would see someone fall and help them? Is it just me and Rick who do that?
At 3:30p Izzy had to go out again and I got dressed for the outdoors and opened the front door. (wearing my yak traks)
There stood the 29 yr old neighbor putting salt on my stoop and side walk.
He said, "I owe you and I just bought the salt and thought I'd take care of you guys this time" I thanked him! First time in 2 years. Better late than never and never look a gift horse in the mouth. 😊
Today I am incredibly sore. But that is to be expected I suppose.
We've had 2 walks today. At 5:15am and at 10:30 am. Both uneventful while wearing my Yak Traks. It will be warm again soon.
Just need to get through the next 2 days. 50's is going to feel like a heat wave.
I may wear shorts.

You should probably be happy they didn't get you falling on video.
Falling on the ice is so scary. I have a pair of similar ice fishing cleats that I keep on a pair of boots I wear when I'm working outside. How easy are those Yaks to get on and off. I saw Yaks tracks outside a store and I cringed on how much damage they'd do to flooring if people don't take them off inside. That's why I don't have them on my other pair of boots.
I don't blame you from being mad at the guys who didn't ask if you were alright. You don't have to be old to break something falling on the ice. My mom almost died from a fall...internal bleeding that didn't show up for a few days but no broken bones. It's good that Izzy stayed with you. Levi would be off running and compounding the situation.
bluzdude, you are correct.😉
Jean, they are not easy to put on at all. You can not walk on floors with these or it will eat my hardwoods. I step on rug in foyer and put boots on tray when coming in the house.
I am glad you are okay and just a little sore. I am convinced that no one cares about anyone else anymore - it is a sad world we live in these days. Had I been there...I would have rushed over to help you if that makes you feel any better. Hope your bruises heal soon!
Ann, why thank you! Hopefully, that doesn't happen again. I felt like a fool. But like buzdude said they could have taken video and then I could have gotten up and bowed after that performance.
But if they would have caught you falling they would have had to have been videoing you beforehand. Hmmmmm. Maybe I could set up a security cam across the street from you.
I'll be the one that gets murdered trying to help someone lol. People are assholes, you should have yelled at them. I'm glad you didn't break a hip, I've heard that's a sign you are old ;) J/k ;)
I did put a sweater on this week and ducked under a few showers. I don't know what I would do if I had icy sidewalks to roam. We joke about becoming clumsy as we age but it really is serious. A fall like that could hurt something but glad to see you were ok. Maybe all that winter clothes padding was a good thing.
Glad you're mostly OK - hopefully the stiffness clears out in a day or two. Shoulda cut your inner bitch loose and embarrassed those guys that were too afraid to even ask how you were. Not very gentlemanly of them at all.
Sorry about that fall. I did see an older woman with a cane slip and fall as she stepped off a curb downtown just the other day. She must have weighed all of 90 pounds but her companion was probably only about 80 pounds. She was easy to pick up. One of the construction guys came over and stopped traffic so she could cross the road. The woman who fell was all embarrassed and kept saying, "This has never happened before."
I told her she was lucky. I have been falling since I started walking.
You know how some get "most likely to succeed" or "best looking" status in their high school yearbooks? I got most spectacular face plant while getting off the bus on an icy morning.
Olga, I'm sorry I laughed at that....kind of.
I told Rick I should have jumped up and put both arms straight up like in gymnastics and act like I was trying to do that. I am clumsy, always have been so falling is something I have been known to do. Hell, I feel in Toronto on wet cement steps and ruptured a disc in my back. I was 23. So the good news this has nothing to do with being an old fart. And my high school yearbook for most likely made me cry. I saw the template before it went in the book and went to the teacher and begged to have it removed. It worked. Most Likely to be the After picture for the Mark Eden adverts. (remember those?)
Barbara, it will be warmer this weekend so all this ice will disappear. I do think having 3 layers on all parts of me certainly cushioned me. But I twisted to hit the snow and that too was softer than pavement. Besides I have my own cushioning so maybe that's a reason to not lose weight. tee hee.
Wow, can't believe they just looked at you and didn't ask if you were okay. I woulda! I remember a woman falling near a store I was at a while back. Three others and I were with her within seconds, and one was a nurse, so maybe just a fluke for you? Either way glad you're okay, and I hope the soreness clears up on its own.
I have yak trax and they're great!
I too have yak tracks and you are right, they aren't easy to put on which is not good for I tend to not use them.
Those two guys should be so ashamed. What uncaring jerks. The last time I fell in the city park, I had a flurry of feet around me--all women who held my dog and helped me up. Yeah those guys are jerks.
Hope the soreness passes soon.
Glad your neighbor has finally come thru for you.
Patti - the boots I get them on the easiest I leave them on.
When I come in the house I stand on the rug and take them off and then put them in the tray. When there is no ice I just wear the other boots for that very reason. I am lazy and that day I was. I didn't feel like going through the trouble of lacing those up and just put the ones I slip into. HA - slip into and fall off of I guess. :-)
It *is* awful that no one even tried to help you. I am so sorry. That's terrible.
What the hell is wrong with people????
I'm glad you're okay, but damn woman, wear your studded tire shoes.:-D
I do the same thing with my ice fishing cleats---just leave them on a pair of boots and have another pair that I wear when I don't need them. How are you doing now? Bruises? Sore muscles?
Unfortunately I think what happened to you is common. In my 20's a friend of mine and I saw an older lady fall down, and as we went to help her I was surprised that those that were closer to her just stared ~ that was over 35 years ago, so I would say that this isn't new behavior. Sad though. I wouldn't just leave you laying in the snow! And shame on them for just watching.
Jean, I'm still a bit sore but no big deal. I twisted funny going down and that is the only thing that still is a bit of a bother in soreness.
It's - I'm sure they were amused. Rick said I should have gotten up and flipped them the bird. While it made me laugh, I would never do that. But it was funny to picture in my mind's eye.
