Lazy People

I have a great dislike for laziness.

Laziness comes in a lot of forms.
You can be lazy at your work.
You can be lazy with your life.
You can be lazy in your relationships/friendships.
Lazy is everywhere and it seems to be growing.

I have a friend who's marriage is in the toilet and has been for 20 years or more.
She doesn't want to walk away because she'd have to actually work for a living.
She would have to live in a smaller home. She would have to make sacrifices.
She does not want to work on her marriage, she doesn't like him anymore.
She tells me these things all the time.
She whines ( and I mean WHINES)  and complains about her life all the time.
I want to scream, "THEN CHANGE IT"

But change takes work. Work is the opposite of lazy. So nothing is done.
Sometimes I think people like to be miserable. It's comfortable for them.
It's all they know.
I remember when Dr. Phil used to be on Oprah and he'd say, "How's that workin' for ya?"
That is what I want to say to her most days.
Today she told me about counseling.
She wanted him to go but now she won't do the homework, won't "forget" the issues, won't move on. Her husband actually told her that he's trying and he feels like she isn't trying.
She said to me, "I'm not and can you blame me?"
Why yes I can.
You either make a conscious choice to accept and work on the issues and then move on to the best of your ability. If you can't do that then make another choice.
She said, " I just want to be left alone but he can live here. but he expects a loving wife and friend."
Why yes, that is convenient for you but what about him?

For some reason today I was honest with her....for better or worse.
I told her if she really doesn't want to make the changes try to learn how to live with this.
I know it shocked her. But I have been just listening to her for 20+ years now.
It's the same thing over and over again. So today I was honest.
At the end she said, "You're right I won't move or change my life to get rid of him. I'll just wait until he dies."
Oh lovely thought. (her children are in college and grown)
At this point I just shut up. It will never change until he dies I guess.
I don't understand that thinking but it's her life.
I just don't want to hear it anymore.
I suppose that makes me a bad friend.....I get that too.
She has sucked the last bit of life out of me. She's draining.
I feel badly for some reason that I can't just listen anymore.
But I'm exhausted and I just can't.

My other gal pal is also miserable.
When we went to her wedding Rick said this:
It's going to be a great first marriage

I then smacked him. You can't say that at someones wedding, even though we knew this wasn't going to last.
Polar opposites in values. Values are a big damn deal.
It's not the simple things like she's a people person and he's anti-social.
Nope the hard core stuff that means a lot to her.
She's all about family. He hates being around his or her family.
It means everything to her to spend holidays and vacations with family.
He won't go. She does holidays and vacations alone.
She has a strong faith. He has none and ridicules hers.
She resents him for that. He resents that his kids are having to learn what he calls "bullshit"
He is incredibly lazy and will do nothing to assist in the house or the children.
He told her he didn't want more than 1 child.
They have 2. He believes the discipline and child rearing is her responsibility.
She believes they should be partners.
You see what I mean? Big things.

They lived together and lived next door to us before marriage
We liked them both as individuals but together we felt it was oil and water and wasn't going to end well.
He was up front about all of these things before they were married so why is she surprised?

They still are married only because they are too lazy to leave.
He'd have to go to work.
She is the main bread winner and she does everything else too.
He has recently gone back to work  after 2.5 yrs of not working or looking for work.
She found him this job.
He hung out most of the day at a bar and gained about 80lbs.
She doesn't want her kids to be from a divorced family she keeps telling me.
Yet if you go to their home it's so thick with tensions it's painful to be there for any length of time.  You can't tell me it's better to raise your children like that.
Her sons are being taught to be disrespectful to women and being a load on the sofa is what dad's do.  She takes the boys camping, to scouts, and ball games.
He sits on the sofa watching tv or hanging at the brew pub with his pals.

I want to feel sorry for them both but can't.
I feel sorry for their children though.
A great deal of empathy for their children.
These are the children's examples of a loving family.
These are their examples of parenting.
These are their examples of relationships.
These are the lessons they are learning from their parents on how to treat one another.

I have listened to these women cry and moan for years now and I don't know what else to do.
It has become something of an exhaustion for me.
I feel like a bad friend because I am tired of it because neither will do anything to make their life better.  Sometimes you must make those difficult decisions.

They both have contacted me this week and hit me from both sides.
I do what I always do, listen.
They just want to vent.
They don't ask for my opinion so I let them vent but it has taken a toll on me too.
I no longer see them socially as much as before.
I dread it when I have to talk to them because I know it's going to be hours of negativity.
But that's what a friend is for. And what makes me feel guilty as all hell.
It has exhausted me yet as a friend aren't I suppose to listen to them and give them a safe place to fall?
I feel like a bad person because I just can't take it all anymore.

Two words: caller ID.
Though with everything that is going on with my oldest and his nasty divorce, I feel like one of your two friends.....
That said, it's been great having the friends that I can talk to about what is going on around here, if for no other reason, to hear what is going on inside of my head out-loud. Sometimes, I think my friends are tired of hearing the saga, but now they'll ask/bring it up, knowing I need to talk about it.
Having good friends for that is an awesome thing.
Think of yourself as an awesome thing!

You are not a bad person. I'm surprised you lasted this long listening to them whine to you all the time. People like that make me so very angry. I get that change is scary, but it's something that has to be done. Maybe you should buy them that book "who moved my cheese?" lol.

I think you should start to distance yourself from them. It doesn't have to be abrupt about it. Just phase out slowly. You'll feel better in the long run.

Change is hard. You know you can't change anyone and if these women aren't changing themselves, what can you do? You can't say that in the name of friendship you'll continue to listen; it's too much of a hardship on you. And it's not much of a friendship if the other person isn't seeing on some level aware of how you feel (or worse, they are, and don't care or don't know how to stop).

I agree that some people like misery, are used to it. It's hard to know how to act when things are going well. The first woman you talk about irks me because what good is counseling when you've already determined you want to leave? Are there going to be some revelations made that make you run into his arms? Not when you aren't even doing the assignments deemed to help you make it work. The second woman reminds me of my sister. My niece was maybe 8 when my sister and her husband were having a bad fight. When she realized my niece was at the door, listening, she told her to go to her room. My niece said she needed to stay so that she'd know how to be/react/what to say when she fought with her husband. Like that shit is inevitable and a normal part of marriage. That was her eye opener. Trying to stay for the kids was all she knew before then, and then one day she just woke up.

You are being a good friend b/c you continue to listen. But be a friend to yourself first, Peg, and tell them the effect their bitchfests are having on you, especially when you offer advice and they make no efforts to change their situations.

Ladies thank you.
Mamma - your situation is very different. You can't do anything about the situation you are a bystander. I hope it gets better for you soon.

Carolyn - Thank you.I have the book "Who moved my cheese" I should probably give it to them huh? I doubt that either will do what it takes to make their lives better though. And I have slowly distanced myself. I needed to so my head didn't explode....self preservation. Doesn't mean I don't feel guilty though.

Arnebya - I don't know that my friend, like your sister, will see the light until it's too damn late. The first one is a lost cause Im afraid. The 1st one pissed me off so much today that I had to take to my blog and vent away. Gee maybe I should tell them to get a blog. :-)
The other thing you said, about counseling being no good if she wants to leave. No, she wants him to leave and to continue to support her lazy ass and keep her lifestyle. That is what irks me.

On the first one she's been married 20 years, she'd probably get some good alimony ;) Most likely he'll just leave her at some point.

The 2nd one, she'll get tired of it and screw someone on the side I'm guessing. Probably the scout master or whatever.

My friend that is engaged will call me complaining so much. I tell her she should live seperate from him and just date him again for awhile (he moved in with her and then she got laid off so now that's another reason to keep him around). My advice to her is always "til death do we part" is a REALLY REALLY long time.

There's been a lot of times I've thought about leaving and then things get better. Then they get worse. I can't seem to walk away when I know it might get better again.

Change does take effort. Sometimes it just doesn't seem like the payoff will be big enough to invest the amount of effort needed. But, it usually is.

Julie - alimony is the only reason the husband stays - he's too tight to pay it. She's too lazy to leave - match made in heaven.

Jay - wow really don't agree with that statement.

No, you aren't a bad friend, you are a very tolerant friend. They feel comfortable enough to unload their feelings on you, however, they seem to not understand how heavy that load can be. This actually means you are a better friend than they are. They need to understand that, while they may be resistant to change with their spouses... they just might unwillingly undergo a change with their tolerant friend.

Oh dear Peggy; been there, done that! More than laziness, I despise WHINING!!! Either SH-- or get off the pot! and I mean it. I can sympathize with someone for only so long but when it gets to the point of sucking my life and they are fixated on making everyone around them miserable, well, then it's time to back away...just saying!

I was going to agree with Jay but I'm making the effort to change my mind.

Peg--you are not a bad person. You are kind, sweet, generous and these friends of yours are taking advantage of you. Sometimes it just gets too much to hear the same thing over and over. Take care of yourself first! The rest will fall into place and you will be better able to listen. Hugs.

that was so kind of you....but seriously I'm a big old wench. Ask anyone.:-)

Mike...Thx...you never fail to make me laugh!

You are a better woman than I am, Peg, because I would have distanced myself from those folks a looooonnngg time ago. Especially GF#1. Wow. 20 years of listening to her crap. I hereby nominate you for sainthood!

I agree with everyone else who said you have to take care of you first. Make caller I.D. and voicemail your new best friends. Set a timer when they call for 15 minutes and when it goes off, tell them you have to go and hang up. If you feel particularly brave, buy them each a copy of "The Dance of Anger: A Woman's Guide to Changing the Patterns of Intimate Relationships" by Harriet Lerner for Christmas.

I really hope you'll be able to get over your guilt. They are emotional vampires who are sucking you dry. You don't have to keep letting them do that.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Dame - I am doing it all that everyone suggested.
As far as guilt.....I swear the Italian Catholic parents instilled this in me and while I have left their religion it's been difficult to exorcise it all. :-)
