I loath the Food Police.
We all get what we are to do but Americans obviously don't want to because we are fatter than ever.
They've made Paula Deen Satan.
They act so high and mighty.
Now they want to regulate sugar as a toxin.
Look our parents and grandparents were thin and ate this stuff.
But they died younger. They weren't told what food was to be eaten in moderation or to be aware of the problems that could arise. They also moved more than we do today.
But I think there were other differences with the older generation.
They grew up eating real food. No chemicals and fake food.
Rick and I know very few people who eat real food.
Hell I don't even use microwave popcorn because it is loaded with junk.
I remember having someone over for dinner and they asked if I really made that mac 'n cheese from scratch. No blue boxes at my house but if you want to eat from them I don't care. I am not going to police anyone about their food.
It all comes down to moderation.
I think if you have a butter laden dish by Paula Deen every once in awhile it will not kill you.
If you eat like that all the time, it surely will.
How dumb must one be to think you eat like that all the time?
I have made some desserts by Paula for parties and such.
Always a big hit. No one ate the whole thing. A piece. Yummo!
But you can't eat a stick of butter a day or you will be in an early grave.
So why make her be Satan? She's not making you eat like this every damn day.
I watch a lot of Food Network TV and I find recipes and make them my own.
Cooking isn't like baking. It is not an exact science.
These are ideas and you can make them meat free or eat them as they show them.
These are ideas like the ones on HGTV.
I don't always like the designers finished projects but I always learn a trick or two or tweak it to make it my own.
So the food police want to make it so that sugar can be a regulated toxin.
Doesn't every adult know by now that eating a large amount of sugar isn't good for you?
Haven't we all heard over and over again how spiking your glycemic levels is a big cause of weight gain? And don't we all know that obesity brings on a plethora of illnesses?
I personally will eat sugar any day over the chemical of Aspartame.
Have any of you ever read this stuff? Or this?
It will make you think twice about aspartame.
But if you want to injest it go for it. I will not police you or point it out to you.
Rick was having a lot of the side effects from aspartame and he had to do a detox.
It was scary. But once he got it out of his system he no longer had headaches or any of the other issues. He now drinks real coke only, made in Mexico no less, with real sugar.
It tastes a lot like the coke we know from being kids. Less sweet and actually better.
He now just drinks less of them.
I have never been a pop drinker (or soda if you call it that) just not my thing not for any reason other than I just don't like it unless I had a hang over.
For some reason a pepsi or coke the morning after always be what the doctor ordered.
So I don't drink anything with sugar unless I am having a Cabernet Sauvignon or in the summer I do love my Kool aid. But if I did drink pop that would just make me use some common sense and drink less. Same with kool-aid. These are just my personal feelings.
If you want to drink aspartame - go for it.
I am not the police and that's my point!
I will never come to your home or eat out with you and point out that I wouldn't do it that way.
It's your life, your choice, and who the hell am I to change your mind?
Now do we really need the government to tell us what we can and can't eat?
Parents feed their kids junk all day long. Chicken nuggets, blue boxes of mac and cheese.
I don't know people who actually make meals anymore that aren't out of a box.
(I know a time thing)
I also don't know parents who give their children milk either.
It's always sugar laden juice or pop.
I find that sad but again it's their life.
I am not the police.
So if adult people want to eat junk. Let 'em.
If adult people want to feed their kids junk, let 'em.
If adult people want to be vegan's, go for it.
If adult people want to smoke cigarettes, let 'em.
By God there comes a point when people need to be adults and take responsibility for themselves.
We have all been told and told again how to eat and be healthy.
If we chose not to do it who's fault is it but our own?
So if I want to have some butter - bug off.
If I want to eat red meat - bug off.
I will not eat fat free this or that because it is loaded with chemicals.
My own doctor has told me time and time again she would prefer I eat real food in moderation.
Having said all that I want the food police to leave me the hell alone.
If I am going to put real butter on my real popcorn don't say anything.
And if you do, don't you dare ask me for a taste of mine 'cause I will not share with the food police.
I have gone to dinner with people who say things like, "Are you really going to eat that?"
I generally just smile and say, "Yup, want some?"
And the last time this happened it was from a person who left the table while we were drinking wine after dinner to have a smoke.
See?.....Food police drive me crazy!
Mange!

Next thing you know you'll be telling us you like lima beans.
Mike - not on your life! Hate lima beans...most beans for that matter. Love sugar, carbs, butter and ice cream, red meat and lots of wine and gin! Food police hate me! :-)
I have a FOOD SHERIFF on my job. She is obsessed with psychical fitness and is constantly bringing me tofu and articles about obesity. She means well and lives the example she preaches, but it is annoying.
I think adults should be able to eat what they want but I do however think that parents should be more conscious of what they feed their kids. After all the kids can't shop for themselves and you are creating a lifestyle/habit.
But in saying that, healthy food prices need to drop dramatically in order for families to be able do that. You pay more for one apple than an entire large bag of chips?? So I think if the government/FDA started there (making healthy food more accessible and affordable most parents would do the right thing anyway.
I eat what I want when I want as did my grandmother, who will be 92 this year! I can't stand people telling me what to eat. It's my choice. Except I won't touch Brussel sprouts. Yech!
Yes, I agree with what you said about PD. Either way she went with the decision on her health issues she was screwed.
Queen Bee - I love Brussel sprouts. Especially grilled with bacon...tee hee (seriously)
I find it so interesting that our grandparents didn't have high cholesteral and drank and ate what they wanted. My theory is chemicals but who the @#$% knows. My father is the same way - eats everything and anything and loves his bourbon and beer. no health issues at 84!
Liver. That's what does it for that generation. My grandmother swears by it. I can't stand to look at it.
Queen-OMG that is so damn funny!
I used to eat liver and onions as a kid then a friend gasped and said, how could you? Its a pulsating organ. At 12 that grossed me out so badly I never ate it again!!
I couldn't agree with you more. I am under constant watch ever since I've lost all this weight. I get comments all the time "Can you eat this??" "Are you really going to eat that bagel??" It drives me CRAZY. No matter how mnay times i explain that this is a lifestyle and I will never be on a diet, I can't escape. Now I do what you do, smile and offer them a piece. Shuts them up every time.
Aspartame makes me violently ill! The last time I took a medication, it nearly killed me... because it had phenylalanine in it. That's aspartame! In my medication no less! Had I know what that was, I wouldn't have taken it. My doctor got an a$$ chewing he's not likely to forget, too!
Cora/Ms. A - I have heard about kids being so sick and they can't figure out why and eventually it's discovered that they are drinking a lot of sugar free pop and of course that is aspartame. Amazing. Do you know I read all my meds and supplements because of this and gluten - cuz i can't have that. Amazing what is in our pharaceuticals. (sp?)
I swear I think we are all blowing up because of the steroids and hormones they force feed the meat and all the bio-engineered veggies. And you can't get away from it. Even the organic that you buy may or may not really be organic because the govt allows for certain circumstances whereby small companies may qualify to claim it. Our forefathers did't diet and ate whatever they wanted. Our kids are the best proof. Little girls that have hips and boobies by the time they are twelve. Most of us were skinny with no curves until late teens to early 20's. They are busting out like those pumped up baby chickens that go from an egg to full grown in two weeks.
My DIL is almost like this. Whenever we go out to eat, she makes a point that she will only eat ONE fried food as in if we are getting an appetizer, she won't order a sampler because it has more than one fried item on it. I'm like hell, we're out enjoying dinner, bring on the grease!
Chasing Butterflies/Tina- oh boy do I agree!
That's why I eat Ben and Jerry's....no hormone fed cow milk....tee hee. Just kidding but I do love my boys. I think hormones and chemicals are the reason although I was pretty busty at 9 yrs old!.
Mamma/bonnie.....your DIL will eat a whole order of 1 fried food but not an order of varying fried food? That just makes no sense.
I couldn't agree more. I think a lot of what is putting people off about Paula is that she signed on to the huge endorsement deal for the anti-diabetic drug. I will only eat aspartame if it is in sugarfree gum - other than that I won't touch the stuff. Same with soda.
As far as cooking not being an exact science - my husband cringes when I say that. I am the queen of cutting corners, not in a good way :-(
I have not been on my reader for a time because of such a busy month and being out of town. I'm so glad being back and hearing one of your rants. They're my favorite and always crack me up. I whole heartedly agree with you about the food police. My dad has been a smoker, drinker, what he calls (hard butter) eater, salter, red meat eater all his life and he's 89. He rarely has a sick day and has stayed out of the doctors office for most of his life. I think perhaps all the alcohol has preserved him. I take after him in the butter department and I'm pretty darn healthy too! Nobody better mess with my butter. The government ought to stay out of everybody's business regarding food and everything else. Government/police/whatever.
I think a lot of the problem lies in what is in the foods we eat. Who knows what all these additives and fake foods are really doing to us? Plus I send my kids out to play and no one else can play, they want to schedule a playdate for next week, kids can't just go out and ride their bikes up and down the street and find other kids to play with.
I hear you loud and clear and I loathe the food police as well...the government is in som many parts of our lives; do they have to monitor the things we put in our mouth as well?
Personally, I think the food we eat is so filled with preservatives and toxins which is why we have the weight issues we do as well as the ADHD, cancer, etc...so if they want to monitor something, monitor that!
i could not agree with you more. my whole life ive eaten pretty much anything i want but within moderation and its kept me fairly healthy and at a decent weight.
i truly believe that processed foods are the worst foods for you. i feel worse after eating potato chips than i do after eating a slice of cake that ive baked at home. thats not to say i dont occassionally eat potato chips though.
btw: i just made the peanut butter pound cake from the latest penzeys catalog. there are 5 eggs in that fucker!!!! it's delicious .....:)
Tammie- I looked for that cake and I swear my catalog is different. I know rick would LOVEthat. I'm not a big PB gal. What page is this on?
Tammie ....okay I'm blind as Stevie Wonder. I found it. Guess who's making PB cake this week? Did you do the cold oven method...and did you do the frosting like that? Seemed odd to me. I have to run out fir cake flour. I never use cake flour.
I'll have let ya know how it turns out.
