I am going to address some comments here or at the very least hopefully, answer them.
Rick saw the podiatrist late yesterday afternoon.
The doctor was puzzled.
Rick has tophi gout. When he has a flare up it is always in his big toe.
It is the only place he has ever had it.
The pain he says is a very sharp pain. Needle sharp.
Rick's heel location of pain is in the back of his heel, not the bottom where an orthotic can help him or plantar fasciitis would occur.
The pain on the back of his heel he says is a burning searing pain.
Very different from his gout pain.
Yesterday the doctor said there was no rupture in his Achilles.
Burning usually means a tendon so that was looked into quite deeply to Rick's surprise and appreciation. I mean after that urgent care this was very thorough and thoughtful.
Rick had a great amount of inflammation in the Achilles and the doctor said it was pissed off.
The doctor also thought gout since he has had it.
However, it presents itself as a different form of gout.
So maybe that is why the difference in pain.
But the doctor is not 100% sure that gout is what this is either.
He was befuddled. But we are going with the treatment for gout and if it works then we know this is a 2nd type that he can get. Lucky boy!
But the good news was that tests were done.
They went over his history.
They talked and shared ideas.
At one point the doctor put his hands behind his head and was just thinking.
Rick said, "What is your thought process doc?"
The doctor laughed and said no one has ever asked me this, they usually just asked what I am thinking it is.
So he began to explain how he was ruling out things and why each was ruled out. Then together they went through each of them.
It was decided to put him on a very heavy dose of anti-inflammatories to combat his inflamed Achilles.
As well as beginning his gout medication in case this could be just a different form of gout. Who knew there were more than 2 types of gout?
I mean if you google it, it shows only two and neither are what he has, tophi gout.
So maybe this is just gout.
He did have shellfish but it was Saturday, March 2nd. It normally hits him sooner than that. But again, no one knows. So we are running on the idea that it is a different form of gout for him. Lucky Rick.
If this medication does not do the trick, he goes back in 2 weeks.
Last night his medication knocked him out. He slept like a log.
A log that snores like and makes noises like a mac truck.
I did not stay in the room with him, I needed sleep.
I walked upstairs and rolled into one of the guest bedrooms.
I didn't even walk to the one with the queen bed, nope the first room was the twin beds. I didn't care, it was quiet. I did not miss my king size bed. I fell right to sleep until Izzy came upstairs and found me at 5:15am. And I must say these mattresses are damn nice up there as are the sheets. No wonder our company never wants to leave.
He is still hobbling but the pain he said went from a 10 to an 8.
That is progress already within less than 24 hrs.
Either way, he is less grumpy and has less pain. So all of that is positive.
Last night I hit his leg two times. I never bump into his legs or feet.
Honestly, the poor guy was abused by me and Izzy last night.
I walked by him while his long legs were out in front of his chair.
I was walking around Izzy and lost my balance and kicked his leg.
Oooh, that wasn't good.
Then later in the evening as I walked by him on the sofa I hit him again.
He said, "Are you trying to hurt me on purpose woman?"
Yep, paybacks are a bitch Rick.
Thank God for life through modern chemistry because he was in a great mood or I should say just back to his old self last night.
This is when drugs are good people.
It saves a marriage.😉

Yes, you are correct Margaret!!! In that application, drugs can save marriage! I have heard of gout from friends of my parents...it sounds terribly painful! And it seems like people that have it love their shellfish too! Stinks to have to not eat something you love though. UGH! Well, at least he is on the mend and feeling better finally! Annster's Domain
Ann, yes he whines about missing his damn shrimp, crab etc. I tell him I don't love not having wheat, barley or rye either. It's in everything we eat. So when he whines I tell him I sat and watched everyone at the restaurant eat remember? Then he shuts up. :-) Bad Margaret.
I like the way Rick's doctor handled that appointment. I hope Rick gets the relief he needs and won't have to go back in two weeks. I did not know that shellfish can make gout flare up. I'm allergic to shellfish---only had it once in my life ending with an ambulance ride from the restaurant to the hospital. I honestly don't understand why people who react to shellfish keep eating it. I went out to lunch with a lady a few months ago who picked a shrimp off the buffet who is allergic to shellfish and I asked her, "Are you sure you want to eat that?" She said, "It's just a small piece." She ended up in ER later that afterward. Crazy to gamble with your life and health because you love something that is poison in your system.
Okay, good drugs from the good doctor. I'm glad you guys are making progress and getting sleep, "...these mattresses are damn nice up there as are the sheets. No wonder our company never wants to leave." - HA!
That podiatrist sounds like a very good doc. I'm sure he'll get to the bottom of it.
And yes, that whole "better living through chemistry" is never more true than when you are in your 50's & beyond.
Rick wasn't snoring. He was dreaming he was a motorcycle.
Jean, that is crazy that the woman would eat this knowing she can't. It would be like me eating bread because I miss it so. Oh my. As for Rick, he can have small amounts.
If it is indeed gout I would guess the shellfish and the liquor combo did him in.
But since this has never happened he may have learned his lesson. And I think this doctor handled it all thoroughly and thoughtfully and even gave us a coupon for 1 month supply of the drug for free which saved us over $320.00
Brian - yes it is even more important in our 50's and beyond!
Mike - he was a Harley then - they are the loudest right?
Very interesting. I seem to remember reading in westerns about men with big toe problems. Of course, back then there was no real medical knowledge. Toe problems sound really bad because we are required to wear shoes 90% of our waking hours - so the rub. I'm glad he found a doctor that really listened and tried to figure it out. Bless his heart. I hope he continues to get some improvement.
Barbara, that is interesting about the westerns. Hmm...
This doctor has been wonderful and he deserved a good one for a change.
My brother has gout as well. He says the pain is indescribable. His dr. sounds very thorough.
Snoring, my husband was brilliant at it. Now that he uses a Cpap, life is much better.
Susan, Rick doesn't snore all the time, but enough to drive me crazy which i guess you understand! He even had a sleep test which he said he couldn't sleep with all the wires and this machine on him. It made me laugh. After they hooked him up, place this piece on his tummy they said to go to sleep. He said with all this on me? I need to be on my side. They said no. So he didn't sleep and the test was a waste of money.
BTW, Rick said shingles is far worse than gout.
Thankfully I have had neither. :-)
Quite the contrast in medical attention and patient care. Glad to hear your marriage is safe now.
Kind of like stubbing your toe and whacking it again over and over lol. You were just helping out haha
Olga, amazing isn't it?
Julie, I know what you are saying. It made me chuckle and he even laughed. Made him forget the other pain I told him. ...tee hee
Drugs are often misunderstood. Sometimes they really do a good job, other times maybe not so much. Glad the pain is being managed. My tendon was actually my tendon and it seems okay now. I need to remember to stretch more.
I love, love, love that the doctor really paid attention and put on his thinking cap to figure things out, and hate that Rick has been suffering with so much pain. I sure hope that he starts feeling better soon so that he's pain and grumpiness free. I remember that hubby used to eat shrimp all the time as a young person, but a year ago, he ate some shrimp and broke out into hives! Luckily Benadryl helped right away. He refused to believe it was the shrimp, but Dr. RO knew better(lol) Hugs...RO
Red meat will also cause gout flare ups. Strawberries and blueberries will help the healing process. My husband drinks black cherry juice also. Hope he heals soon. Margie from Arkansas.
Ro, dr. "wife" (insert name) is always right! :-)
Margie, yes we know that one. The man needs to be a vegetarian but it will never happen. Pork, beef and crab are his faves in the world. Therein lies the problem.
So glad your marriage is on sounder ground. That is if you can keep from running into his bad foot:) A sore body part just seems to beg for accidental abuse. Hope he keeps improving and staying away from shellfish. You can give him lessons on how to abstain from things you love to eat.
Just catching up with my reading. When I read the first post about this I said, "Hey, that sounds gout-y."
Eric sometimes has flare-ups. Bad ones. He wants to decide if it's tendinitis or gout instead of just taking the goddamn medicine. The man drives me insane.
I ask him all the time, "WHY do we have insurance on you if you won't go to the effing doctor?"
So far, he doesn't have a satisfactory answer.
I am glad Rick is better.
I feel for Rick. I have plantar fasciitis on my left left foot and my right foot is the one that has no feeling due to the stroke. People laugh at me because of the way that I walk. That's OK. At least I can move. Peg, get back into Rick's bed. He'll feel so much better. LOL See ya my friend.
