Yesterday someone was talking with Rick and me about an experience he had at a restaurant which makes him no longer be able to eat rice.
Rick laughed and said the only thing he would prefer not to eat is a green olive. Prefer not to eat is the key here.
I have a long list. Contrary to what I look like I am an extremely picky eater.
Rick, well he's like Mikey and he'll eat anything, ANYTHING.
Then this fellow told us both this place he ate that had an insect in his rice and since then he can't eat rice. He did not see it and he crunched on it. He spit it onto his plate which horrified his spouse. While she was yelling at him for spitting in public on his plate, he was looking at an insect he almost swallowed on his plate.
Yea, that would do it for me.
Rick laughed and said well it was something at this restaurant, you can still make rice. He said, no I can't, I just can't. It crunched. It was gross.
I just can't. I understood him.
Rick can't wrap his head around this. Rick will eat all food all the time.
Once as a kid I threw up after having a chocolate chip cookie. Never eaten them since. Rick can't fathom that. If he threw up after eating a cookie, he'd brush his teeth and have more of those cookies. It wouldn't bother him in the least. Took me 30 years before I could even think about drinking vodka again. No, I'm a wuss. Rick not so much in the food department.
For me, the big one is Arby's curly fries.
I was working in Cleveland Ohio and had to see several clients in Boardman, Ohio and the surrounding area. (about an hour and a half drive)
I drove down in the very early morning and saw several of my clients from morning until 5ish. This is not a thriving metropolis but somewhere I had to go none the less. Upon leaving I was driving on a road with a lot of fast food restaurants and thought I'd stop and grab some dinner for the drive home. Not many choices since this was a small town.
I did not eat lunch and I was starving and thought I'd get myself a beef and cheddar (yes before I knew I was celiac) and some curly fries for the ride home.
I get my meal through the drive-thru and hit the road.
I ate my sandwich first. I left the fries for a bit later.
Then later I opened the bag again and started on my fries.
I got one in my mouth and I felt something weird.
I pulled over because it was a weird feeling and stuck to my tongue like a string.
It was a thick hair that was wrapped around the entire curly fry - a very long hair around a long curly fry and my tongue.
When I untangled it off my tongue and pulled this out of my mouth and saw this long curly dark hair. It grossed me out big time.
Once this hair was off my tongue, I spit this out into my napkin and needless to say I did not eat another curly fry.
When I got home I threw them away!
To this day I can't eat a curly fry. I don't care if I make them.
I gag just thinking about it.
Rick, of course, finds this funny. That too wouldn't bother him. He'd remove the hair and keep on eating. Eeww.
Is there anything that you just can't eat ever?

I'm more in Ricks camp. Worms in apples, corn, broccoli - eh. Work around it. But for pickiness? Cucumbers and anything that ends in 'melon' are off limits for me.
Creamed corn. And all because of a story from a teacher in high school. He said that one of the first jobs he had was in a plant that made creamed corn. People used to spit on the floor. The management got mad and put up signs 'no more spitting on the floor'. You probably have already guessed what happened next. Yep. They started spitting in the creamed corn.
Until reading your post, the only food I wouldn't eat is Hummus. Now I can't eat Hummus or Curly Fries!
I have to go throw up now!
I'm more like Rick, too. I could eat around a worm in an apple. The hair on the curly fry would put me off on the rest of those in the bags but a month later I'd eat them.
Gotta tell you I read your first sentence about the rice, stopped reading, made some instead rice and came back to finish reading. Now I'm looking for bugs in my rice but boy does it taste good!
All of you are cracking me up!!
I am never eating creamed corn again, then again, I haven't eaten it since childhood.
I could never eat an apple where I found a worm. Nope. I'd give it to Rick. :-)
This post brought up an old memory. A diet program I heard of – I promise you, I didn’t try it, but someone I knew had and the procedure was to close your eyes and think of all kinds of gross stuff covering your trigger foods – fattening foods you can’t resist. For her, it was chocolate cake. So she visualized worms crawling all over the cake, freaking out and tossing it in the garbage disposal. That program didn’t work for her because she said she’d further visualize removing the cake from the disposal, scraping off the worms and eating it anyway. Way worse than Rick saying he’d remove the hair and eat the curly fry anyway. As for me, the only thing I wouldn’t eat, if I didn’t have gut issues and could, would be chocolate pie. Ever since I saw that movie The Help, just the thought of a chocolate pie creeps me out.
Probably the only thing I don't like to eat from a bad experience is shredded carrots. Barfed those up in Kindergarten when someone made me eat them for lunch.
I'm an extremely picky eater too, not that you'd guess that from my muffin top but still. That's my problem, muffins and most other cakes.
