My husband always likes to ask people, “Do you remember what you got for Christmas last year”
You see it bothers him that we put so much importance and stress on ourselves for gifts that no one remembers. Oh, it’s not that he doesn’t want to give. He loves to give.
It started like this...
He pointed out to an old friend of mine who each and every year makes a list of extravagant things (usually jewelry) she wants from her husband to buy her.
(she collects and doesn’t wear or go anywhere)
When she was asked this question by Rick she couldn’t remember a single thing.
She couldn’t remember a thing that her husband, who is on disability, saved to get her.
That was his point exactly.
Rick has asked this question to a lot of people and there has only been 1 person who could list what they got a year or two before.
Of course he never says to that person, “See you didn’t need that”
He normally just smiles and they ask him if he remembers and the conversation goes that direction.
It genuinely upsets him that people can’t remember. He feels that maybe once again we are so selfish and self entitled that we can’t even appreciate a thoughtful gift. And that the whole warm family Christmas is gone and replaced with stuff.
I see his point and fluctuate on both sides of that spectrum to be honest with you.
I sincerely don’t recall a single Xmas gift I got as a child.
What I remember is the feeling. The excitement. The family. The traditions.
The warmth and love in the house. I remember my father told me one Christmas Eve that Santa really didn’t like milk with his cookies, he would prefer a beer. So a beer was left for Santa from that year on. I guess I was too young to ask about Santa drinking and driving. That makes me laugh. A few years ago I mentioned that to my Dad and we all got a kick out of it.
My sisters and I never thought a thing of it. That was our normal. Santa had Kohler beer with his pizzelles (ethnic cookies) at our house.
I remember all the cousins, aunts and uncles visiting and the food and the smells, the party atmosphere for days/weeks and the snow. I have wonderful and I mean truly wonderful memories of my family holidays. But I don’t recall a single present.
I guess that was my husband’s theory at it’s finest.
Many years ago when he asked me that and I couldn’t answer we decided to not buy one another gifts. Thing was he couldn’t either and it really, really bothered him.
At this time we both were fortunate to have great careers and making very good money.
We didn’t have a need and if we did along the way we bought it.
So we decided to do what my father did every year. We would pick a family in need and anonymously buy them something. We got family needs and names from a different church each year. It was fun to get the information of the family and go shopping.
Sometimes it was food as well as a doll for the little girl or lego’s or whatever.
It was always such fun for us. We hoped it was a fun surprise for them.
Some years we have bought ourselves something together that we wanted for our home.
But mostly during those times we just bought for others and hoped they would remember.
Those were our new traditions and they made us both feel so fortunate and thankful.
Our friends actually thought we were crazy. No gifts for one another?
:Nope just for others", we'd say. It seemed to upset them and they asked so many questions. Don’t you feel badly on Christmas morning? Hell no!! Doesn’t it upset you that Rick didn’t buy you something? C’mon what did I need? Besides we made other types of holiday memories that were fun for us. Kick ass homemade eggnog for Christmas eve with great music and dancing with only the lights from our tree. We have made our memories and traditions they are just without gifts. For some reason that freaks people out.
Besides as you all know who have been reading me for any length of time that my favorite holiday is my birthday. We seriously celebrate our birthdays. And I am spoiled every single day in some way by my hubby I don’t need a special gift from him on Christmas.
Fast Forward to today.
We no longer make good money and have lost those jobs like millions of others in our country.
Times are very difficult right now for us.
It saddens us that we can’t buy for another family this year.
Sadly, I am sure there are more families this year than in the years past who need the generosity of others.
My wish for those families is that they will be able to make their warm memories of love, family and the feeling of Christmas somehow.
I am wishing all my blogger buddies out there a very Merry Christmas.
I hope it is everything you want and need it to be!
Merry Christmas Everybody! – See ya’ll next year.

Merry Christmas Peg!
merry christmas peggy!
i fluctuate between your thoughts and ricks on the matter. a lot of the gifts under our tree are practical things like sneakers and clothes, and i dont really expect the kids to remember that kinda stuff. but there are a few more extravagant (by my standards) gifts that i hope are remebered for a while. as for me and jay, we agreed to only give a few small gifts to each other. there just isnt anything we NEED.
on the flip side of all that, my best friend's in laws are way obsessed with the holiday and my friend HATES it. her MIL overdoes it and feels she has to give everyone in the family the same amount of gifts and expects everyone else to do the same. every year, about a week before xmas, i get a call from my best friend, completely stressed out by her MIL. i just dont think thats what the holidays should be about. i want to give gifts because i want to, not out of obligation.
Roc - backatcha girl!!!
Tammie - exactly how I feel. Swear we are long lost siblings or something like that. :-) I too fluatate as I said between both. that is why we still gave others gifts.
This year is a quiet one for us though. I wish it weren't but it could be worse i suppose. haven't talked to you in awhile - it's far worse than it was. oh well. we have each other and this too shall pass.
What did you think of Ricky's HBO show? We loved it!
oh peggy im sorry things have been cruddy for you. please, if you find the time, give me a ring sometime this week. it will give me a break from talking to my children.
oh, and we of course LOVED ricky. we let the boy watch it with us. he's allowed to watch things with cursing as long as its actually funny. :)
I hope you have a wonderful and relaxing holiday. I remember my gifts from my husband the last two years because let's just say they were, uh, memorable....
Carma - hmmm....you can't say that and not share!!!!
I really have been feeling like this this year. Why buy my kids crap that I'm just going to donate to Goodwill next year? No one seems to really appreciate anything anymore. I spent 4 hours shopping yesterday and hardly bought anything because I can't find anything "special" that I know will mean something.
Mom Taxi Julie - how do we change this? I hope you see lots of smiles on Christmas morning! It will be great - you're just feeling the stress of the season. I look forward to Dec 26th. :-)
Merry Christmas Peggy! I can see what Rick's saying...since I read this the first time yesterday I've been thinking about it and trying to remember what I got for Christmas last year....I have no idea. I'm sure it was a video game from my husband (always is) but beyond that? I have no clue.
I DO remember what I got as a child, though. I remember the year I got Mall Madness from my mom and was pissed because I had explicitly asked for a Nintendo. I remember getting a shiny new bike one year. I remember never being able to sleep in on Christmas and always finding myself at the top of the stairs at 4 am waiting for everyone else to wake up....I refused to go down by myself and ruin the surprise.
This year, I hope it will be different. We didn't buy a lot for my girls - My mom took plenty care of that (HA!) but we do have some very special plans with friends and family that we are looking forward to. We're even baking a birthday cake - for Jesus. We just want to celebrate the reason for the season and not let our girls (as young and impressionable as they are) forget why we have Christmas at all.
Merry Christmas!
Giving to strangers is a great way to celebrate Christmas. Though I can remember nearly every gift Leland has bought me, I didn't really need any of it. And though there are a few pieces of jewelry that I love, I don't wear it as often as I should.
This year Leland and I are exchanging one gift only. I hope that one day we will have money to give to strangers, to really make people feel good about the holiday.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!!!1
For good or bad I do remember some of the Christmas presents that I recieved as a child, teen, adult from my parents. I even remember what gifts were given to me by well meaning students. But I totally agree with you hubby. It is sad when one can't recall what was given to them the Christmas before. Guess that's one of the reasons we limited our gift giving. That and it seems that the year we decided this it was an exchange of the gift cards to each other. Seemed like I was just giving myself the money back but not to where I would go or, in some cases, not as much. Sounds bad, mean, forgetting the reason for the season, but in the end it became a matter of economics.
Christmas is not my favorite holiday. Especially this year — don't know what my problem is. Buying gifts that we can't afford for people who don't need it frustrates me. We always adopt a couple of kids from our tree at church and that I like. It changes everything when you can buy for someone who needs the things you buy. Consumerism is not my thing. I wish we could just celebrate being together and cut out the whole present thing. The religious aspect (obviously) is my favorite. I love the songs and watching the little kids sing and wear all their pretty Christmas clothes at Christmas mass. The Christmas cookies aren't to bad either. However you celebrate it, I wish you a Merry Christmas with those you love.
I love the way you and your hubby think, merry Christmas.
Alessandra - now that is scary!
Buon Natale!!
I read this out loud to Ryan. We totally identify with this. Thank you for writing this one.
