I've read quite a few Valentine's Day blogs recently.
That got me thinking. Do you celebrate this 'holiday'?
I am not a fan of hallmark holidays. I don't participate in them normally.
I told Rick very early on I found the holiday stupid and that he shouldn't feel pressure to do some grand gesture on that day.
He replied, "how about every day?"
I'm okay with that. 😊 I like the way he thinks.
I get flowers from this man a great deal. He was so excited when this wholesale place moved into the neighborhood and he stops by and buys me what they have most of at the moment. I know as soon as there are tulips he will come home with my favorites.
He buys me chocolate as a surprise all the damn time because he knows that I should be in a 12 step program for my addiction to all things covered in chocolate, he instead is my enabler and brings me goodies all the time.
Last week as I began to eat real food I said, "I'd die for a small piece of chocolate" He said, "don't die, I have a surprise for you"
He went to the hall coat closet and pulled out a small truffle he hid in a coat pocket. I am surprised it didn't melt. it was in a tiny box. He was working next door to a wine shop and they also sell truffles and he bought 2. One for me when I say, "boy I would die for a small piece of chocolate" and one he ate as he drove home. He did admit both were for me but it smelled so good so he ate one.
I love that he just buys them for no reason other than he knows how I love it. It also makes me laugh that he hides them for when I say after dinner, "boy a good piece of chocolate would set off that meal"
And voila, he gets up and gives me a piece.
When I was so sick and he cared for me and picked up the slack around here I appreciated that. That was a gift.
When he unloaded the dishwasher and it took me days to find where he put my favorite mug, I may have wanted to return his gift.
But the point is that was so terrific and that to me is better than any ole valentines day gift.
I would love a box of chocolate but I also know I can't have them because I will eat them all. So I like how he doles them out to me when I ask.
I have a serious issue with chocolate.
Add wine and that is now a real problem because I can't do meetings at two12 step programs. Who has the time for that?
So pass the chocolate.
On Monday, he left me a note to find in my parka pocket.
Well, he left it in my pocket before Monday, but I was wearing a different coat and never found it until Monday.
I was outside with Izzy and I put my hand in my pocket and felt it.
It was a nice little letter of love and c'mon it was only Feb1st.
Isn't that better than HAVING to do it on the 14th?
I will take that over any Valentine's Day present.
But if you should wish to send me a box of truffles I'll accept them.

You are very lucky my friend!
Margaret, Sweet as can be. Rick and you make such a nice couple. Very in sync.
Was I dreaming? I swear I read an earlier blog for today re Joan Didion & it disappeared when I returned to comment?
Anyway, when my other half's job involved catching a flight to go somewhere for a few days...I'd leave a tiny note in one of his pockets to find. Hated the thought of him alone in a hotel room for a few nights away from home. Take care.
Julie, I know and I always feel I need to apologise for that.
Regina - no I felt it was a downer and I sounded angry so I thought maybe I should take it down? Think I should repost it? Was it a downer for you?
I bet he got a kick out of finding the note just as I do.
Margaret, I thought the Didion piece reflected your opinion and not really sounding angry - an honest opinion - how you feel. It wasn't a downer for me; just interesting. You might want to check out online in the Atlantic Sept. 2015 "The Elitest Allure of Joan Didion." After reading your piece and having read a few of her books, I did a search to see what I could find about "making her tick." This article was excellent. It helped me understand more about where she is coming from. I think we're all entitled to how we feel about anything. How we feel has a lot to do with our own backgrounds, etc. I can see how her background certainly has a lot to do w/ her writing style and life. Anyway, yes he did like finding my notes. The first time especially was a nice surprise for him. You know how having to stay away from home in a motel/hotel for business reasons is somewhat of a downer. Hugs.
Regina, then I may post it again. I know if I met her I would say far away. I do not think she is a nice person.
We both traveled several days a week for 20+years. Sometimes I loved it,as did he. But we'd much rather travel together
I enjoyed the Didion post too. I didn't think it was angry, I thought it was thoughtful. I don't know jack about her other than she looks like a walking corpse, I'm aware of her books by title and her renown but doubt I've read anything by her, mostly I've read about her and even that hasn't stuck in my mind. You should re-post so I can have another go at reading it again, I was about to do that when I discovered it was gone.
Grace - it's back. I read the Allure article that Regina mentioned in her comment. It didn't shed any light on why she is such a narcissist. It touched on the exact things in the documentary. It said at the end that younger people don't find her all of that. I'm not young but I would agree with that assessment. I would describe her as an elitist, judgemental, narcissist, cold, aloof, and a lot like trump.
You know how trump could watch kids being torn from their mother's arms and put into a cage and feel nothing but happiness and say, Oh well they shouldn't be here? Callous and unfeeling? That is how she would report it and see it. IN MY OPINION.
Wow and here I thought his sense of humor and looks were his only magic. What a guy!!!
Ya, Rick is a keeper who knows how to keep his woman happy.
I found this. It's full of words I've never heard before.
A truffle is the fruiting body of a subterranean ascomycete fungus, predominantly one of the many species of the genus Tuber. In addition to Tuber, many other genera of fungi are classified as truffles including Geopora, Peziza, Choiromyces, Leucangium, and over a hundred others. These genera belong to the class Pezizomycetes and the Pezizales order. Several truffle-like basidiomycetes are excluded from Pezizales, including Rhizopogon and Glomus. Truffles are ectomycorrhizal fungi, so are usually found in close association with tree roots. Spore dispersal is accomplished through fungivores, animals that eat fungi.
Sweetpea once left me a little note on my desk saying, "I love you." So then I put it somewhere she would find it. And off we went for months... each of us hiding the note somewhere the other would eventually stumble upon it...
Under her coffee cup
in robe pocket
Folded into her jeans
Under her pillow
In the medicine cabinet
Underwear drawer
In the liquor cabinet... and so on.
The game usually ends when the hiding place is so good it takes months to turn up and the hider has forgotten all about it.
As for Valentine's Day, I'm like many I suppose. Hated it when I was single because it depressed me that I was spending it alone. Love it now that I'm in a relationship. So thanks for the reminder that it's coming up!
