Senior Living

When I turned 35 I began getting marketing material from a local retirement community along with nursing care if needed. It was a very nice community with pretty apartments with all kind of activities set on some beautiful land.
Of course, when your time came that you could not live in your apartment any longer you moved to the nursing home side.

Imagine my surprise when I got this the day before my 35th birthday!
I received a beautiful glossy brochure along with a letter welcoming me.
I was just turning 35!

Now Rick found this funny. I did not.
I continued to get this damn marketing material for months on end.
I called them and told them I was only 35.
They said they would remove me, but they didn't.
The following year I was moving to Seattle.
I called them again and told them I would be moving, do not waste your money and brochure, remove me from your list.
Oh, they did not. I was getting them forwarded to Seattle.
Finally, the forward stopped and I no longer received these damn retirement brochures. I was now 36. I was thrilled it was over.

Rick kept telling me to let it go, eventually, I'd need them and I'll have them.
HAHA, Funny boy.

Then on my 40th birthday, I was living in Seattle and I began getting the same type of material again. A different community of course but the same congratulatory letter on my birthday and decision to move to this awesome community.

Rick came home after work and I was sharing my story about getting on this damn list again and being bombarded with old people stuff.
He laughed and said you must have gotten into some database when Springhill began sending you things.  We laughed and I told him, "I guess so."
And that was that.
But then a slew of these brochures began coming from all over Washington State.

As I walked back home from my mailbox I was floored at how many retirement communities brochures were in my mailbox. I walked into the house and threw them on the dining table and said to Rick, "Look at all these, how can I make these people understand I am only turning 40?"

Rick began to laugh. I mean REALLY laugh.
I stared at him and then it hit me - HE.DID.THIS.TO.ME.

I said, "You son of a bitch, you did this didn't you?"
He nods, because he is laughing too hard to speak.
I asked, "Did you arrange for the 1st one when we lived in Pennsylvania when I turned 35?"
He nods.
I threw a brochure at him.

"Why do you think this is funny Richard?"

"Because it really bothers you to age and I thought it was funny."

"You can't keep a secret to save your life but to harass the hell out of me you find the strength to do it for this?"

"Yep, that my superpower."

"Nope, your an ass and that is your superpower. Grade A ass Richard!"

"However you need to look at it, dear."

"Can you please make these stop now?"

"You sure you want that? you'll be old before you know it and you'll need them!"

"Bite me! Just make them stop. Now."

He did.

You know what? I'm old and now I think I may need them.

That is probably the best Rick story I've heard to date, but that may be because I've got an appointment to look at a senior living place today. He really does have a wicked sense of humor doesn't he.

OMG, that's the best! I love the Long Con. If it were me I would have let you in on it after the 35 onslaught, but Rick played it perfectly.

Sorry you had to be on the receiving end.

That is a great prank, I would not know how to reach that many places, I guess with the internet it is easy.

Kudos for him keeping it a secret so long, that I definitely could not do. Actually, he may have kept it going too long.

I eye those places when they pop up on Facebook. Not quite ready, but checking them out.

Bluzdude and Joe, Even though I was a bit perturbed, he does make me laugh and has for 32 years. Even though it is always at my expense, I still see the humor. :-)
Joe, as for reaching those places, he sees something on TV and then go to their site and fills it out with my info and a fake birth date. Oh I know how he did it. But how he kept a straight face was the good part. Normally he cracks or makes a face where I can tell he is lying. Not this one.

Jean, enjoy your tour. I can't wait to hear about it. But I would not have said that at age 35. :-)

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Paul, I do too. :-) it's funny and okay to laugh at the whole thing.

I understand your reaction, but from the outside it is pretty funny.
I get a postcard about hearing aids in my mail at least once a week. Usually if I ask someone to repeat it's because I wasn't paying attention.
Lately I have started to get brochures about cremation services. Now that is creepy.

Olga, I find it funny NOW too. :-) Oh dear I don't like the direction your brochures are taking!

What a rascal and that he kept it to him self for so long is a credit to him. I'd have taken credit after the first one.

Great idea!!! My spousal unit hits 60 late this year - she may think they're real! Gotta give it a go . . . .

I had a boyfriend in my mid 30s who had very thin hair. He was often besieged with hair transplant brochures. He didn't think it was very funny. It could have been his brother/roommate who put him on the list but more likely an unhappy ex-girlfriend.
