I got rid of HULU.
Dish and Fox came to some agreement.
I was hoping since it was football season that would make it move faster and it did.
Rick teased me most of the weekend.
He kept saying, "So I now know where you stand, that line you won't cross, but you will cross it for baseball. Good to know"
Bite me, Richard!
He's right, I did cross the line. I also returned it because there is nothing on HULU I would even watch. Handmaids Tale is not my cup of tea and I saw nothing of original programming that was of interest. I canceled it just under 7 days thank goodness.
The fireplace man arrived yesterday at lunchtime.
He was a very odd man. I would guess late 50's to mid 60's.
He was a hillbilly and reeked of cigarettes and B.O.
He was wearing a filthy T-shirt with a dirty pair of shorts that went below his knees. He was also wearing gray socks and crocs.
Everything about him was filthy, his hair, his clothing.
He never smiled but spoke kindly yet at times gruff if that makes sense.
He works on gas fireplaces. So it's not like he is going into an area of soot and that made him this dirty. But boy he had resting bitch face. He was a bit scary to me at first but Izzy didn't seem to mind him.
He took apart my switch on the wall that turns our fireplace on when it works. I asked him why he was taking that off the wall because the switch indeed works. He put in a new switch not listening to me. That wasn't the issue, but I watched him anyway. Then his hands were shaking so much he couldn't hold the screws to screw them in and I told him I'd do it. He stopped. I think he may be a drunk.
He could not fix my fireplace and told me that he does not install new ones.
He cleaned it thoroughly and rudely said to me, "I see you try to clean this"
I laughed and said, "try?"
He told me, "no one cleans their fireplace why did you?"
Because I was told the dust will clog up these holes that I pointed to.
I also use the product Dust Off that people use on their computers.
When we bought the house it was in the info about the new house.
Is that wrong that I clean it?
He told me it was correct but I could do a better job at cleaning it.
Ah, just like my mother would say. Gee thanks hobo fireplace fixer!
In my defense, I have not cleaned it since last winter because it didn't work.
I was lazy and figured why bother. I didn't know I was going to be so harshly judged by Mr. Stinky Shakey Hands.
He reminded me again that he does not replace/install new ventless gas inserts.
He kept telling me what it was as if I didn't know.
Finally, on the oh say, 10th time, I asked him why he keeps saying ventless gas inserts. He said did you know that is what you have?
I replied, "I did. It's on the info when I bought the house remember?"
"Oh yeah", he says and nods his head.
Besides the fact that I live in a townhome and they are all ventless gas inserts. duh!
He suggested I call a company nearby me that I will never call because I know they are incredibly expensive from what my neighbors have told me. Either way, I can't call anyone because I can't afford it right now.
I will live without the fireplace for a while. Now my job is to get his stench out of my home is what I was really thinking. Whoo- eee - this stinky man is going to linger long after he's gone. I walked by a candle and lit it.
After he was done I asked how much I owed him and he said,
"nothing, Merry Christmas." Never smiling or looking at me.
He said," I promised I'd fix it and I can't fix it."
"But Dave, please let me pay you for your time."
"Nope, I won't take any money for my time I was in the neighborhood to fix one of your neighbors so I was here anyway. That's it."
I had no cash on me except $1 bill.
I wasn't going to insult him with a $1 tip.
I felt terrible. I had figured I'd put it in the bill, his tip since he was the owner.
I thanked him and he just grunted and left.
He was so damn odd. Stinky, dirty with hands shaking.
Never smiled, but spoke kindly as I said. I really think something was off with this poor man. I think it was very nice of him not to charge me.
While there I offered him water, pop, and coffee even lunch.
He grunted no, don't want anything he would say.
He walked out the door and when I realized he was leaving I said, thank you and goodbye but he was out the door. I ran after him with the switch laying on my counter. I asked if he wanted/needed it. He yelled out his window to toss it as he drove away. It was a perfectly good switch why would you throw it away? Oh well.
By 4pm my home still had Mr. Stinky Shakey Hands smell all over it.
I finally filled a small saucepan with water. I added some cinnamon along with a cinnamon stick, some orange peel and turned it on low.
That homemade concoction took out the smell by 6pm.
At least smelling cinnamon was better than B.O.
When talking to Rick about the man who stunk up our home he said, "And you laugh at me when I bring extra shirts so I don't walk in looking like this man did on my 2nd or 3rd job. Now, do you understand?"
"I always did understand the issue Rick I just like to bust your balls.
What fun would it be if I didn't"
Rick was actually quiet for a full minute and said, "I don't know, let's try to find out!"
"Nope, not in this lifetime. Your next wife can be quiet and submissive for you babe, not your current wife."

And Yankees win/sweep the Twins in 3. The Twins hot bats I believe only had 7 hits for 3 games. Now the dreaded Astro's. Not looking good or in our favor but who knows they keep surprising me. Could someone trip Cole and Verlander so they twist their ankles or fall and break their index fingers on their throwing hand? I don't want them to be hurt hurt, just a little somethin' since they are so unbeatable. Verlander could get lost in his wife's cleavage (Kate Upton - it's possible)and not come out for days and when he pushes off he snaps his index finger on his throwing hand. Oops, can't throw now. Cole could trip over a cord and twist his ankle so badly he can't pitch for 5 days. After we win they will be fine.
Yes, I've thought this out.

If Izzy trusted him, I would too. Dogs have a good sense of dangerous people. But that would give me the creeps, especially the shaky hands! I suppose a bad switch does account for the issue a percentage of the time.
Yes Jean, that is exactly how I felt. Izzy was okay with him and she kept her eye on him the whole time. That always makes me feel better. Although there are days I think if we were robbed as long as they gave her food she would show them where all the electronics are. Yes, I understood his reasoning for the switch although it clicks when it connects. It wouldn't click if it didn't work. It clicks therefore it works but what should be happening is the ignitor should turn things on. That is what is broken and can't be fixed. Just buy a whole new fireplace insert. $$$$$
OH MY GOSH......
"Thank you Hobo fireplace fixer"!!!!!
Peg, you are always good for a laugh....I know why Rick loves you (aside from the boobs).
Have a great rest the day.
Linda, thx! 😊❤
Sorry to have the Yanks beat the Twins. Rottenchester is the Twins AAA farm team, so I like to root for the boys that came through the system here. Now that the Twins are out, I really don't have anyone to root for. Definitely not the "Yank these"
Fireplace situation is odd. If the switch clicks - does it make a spark? If it sparks, it should light the gas - if the gas is flowing. could be a bad sparky thing or maybe a faulty gas valve. Question then becomes if those parts are available as replacement units.
And don't go feeling too guilty about Hulu. They offer it for free to sucker you in. They understand the risk better than you do. At least you didn't fall for it!
Glad to hear that he did not charge you anyway. From the time when people actually paid only for what they got and you got nothing (except the stink) HA HA! HUGS
Brian, I actually felt bad for the Twins, we seem to be their kryptonite. I didn't feel so badly that we won, but I did feel badly for them. They played so damn well all year. Most HR's in baseball.
fireplace - No all guys who have looked at this say they don't sell the replacement parts. You have to buy something new. We've had 3 men look at this now and that is the consensus. I tried like hell but now I'll just freeze and turn up the heat.
Ann, you got that right. (the stink and that it was nice)
My husband was NOT happy the A's lost lol. He went to the game and came home very sad.
We have farmers who come in where I work. Occasionally one will come in after rolling around with the pigs apparently. I'm always saying they should keep a clean shirt in their truck.
Julie, yikes. it's even worse when you're there in person.
Yep, that guy could learn a lesson from Rick, have deodorant, clean shirt and breath mints in the truck at all times. :-)
I'm surprised you let the guy in the house. I don't think I've ever had someone like that come in.
Cardinals have one more game to win to move up.
Mike, if that was the case, no service person would come in my house. Yep, been watching Cards and Atlanta, rooting on your birds!
Had a similar guy a while back come out, couldn't find any problem and refused to charge me. He finally took $10 for gas. But, my guy smelled good and was clean.
Way to go Yanks. I can't get the American league games but I can the National league as they are broadcast on TBS. However one day I did hit Gameday on the computer to keep an eye on the Yankees. You have two of my favorites former Marlins-Stanton and Maybin. You all really shut down the Twins who were holding the home run record. How about if Cole and Verlander developed blisters on their throwing hands? Not serious but should shut them down.
Go Yankees.
Patti, okay big oozing blisters! Stanton is not a favorite of mine. In fact, I don't care if he even plays. Maybin, I really like!
You got your wish about Verlander losing. I can understand how you feel. My Cardinals won game 4 against Atlanta in a wild, exciting game. YES!
But my main thoughts prompting me to write are about your fireplace. We have one, too. Our thermostat quit. Clicking did not mean fire starting. I am fortunate to have a husband who can fix almost anything and understands electronics as well as mechanical things. He replaced our thermostat with an older style. It has a mercury switch. It is NOT electronic. He says that the pilot light (I think) should heat components which send a signal to the thermostat to cause it to ignite the fire. But that signal is too weak to get the job done. He just removed the old thermostat, bought the mercury switch one and put it on the wall and our fireplace WORKS!!! I read you blog regularly and if you have questions, reply to this and I'll get my husband to give you more specific information. Good luck.
Peg, I didn't quite get my wish. I need him to lose if we play him :-) I saw that last game between Cardinals and Atlanta. I am rooting for Cardinals. I didn't understand the throwing of the bat your man did. Dangerous and foolish but thankfully no one was hurt.
My husband said it is not the switch. The ignitor is shot.
Rick said your idea for the switch is a good one. (he was an electrician in another life) but it isn't our issue. He said he'd try it this weekend because we have nothing to lose.
HULU has been trying to get me on board for years, and I always pass. Give me my Netflix so I can see a mix of movies, musicals, cooking shows and lots of other stuff, please. Even though the man passed on showering for the day,(or maybe several) it sure was kind of him to not accept payment. Like you, I'm now wondering what's going in his life or if there are some mental health issues. Glad you were able to get rid of that scent with the smell of cinnamon which I love. Hugs, RO
Ro, you know what's weird. I have thought about him each day since he's been here. I wrote a very nice review for him. I was thrilled he didn't charge me because quite honestly things are very tight right now. So it was a Godsend. But something was off, Aspergers maybe? I don't know. Rick asked if he smelled like liquor I said I didn't get real close to him because all I could smell was body odor.
Well, nice of the stinky dirty man to not charge you, but what a character!
The clean, good-smelling people usually charge a fee to just come to the house.
Abby, you never fail to make me laugh!
good one!
