I was left a comment that made me think of something that not only happens to her but most women I know.
God knows I deal with it and have dealt with it a lot in the past.
In ancient times when Rick and I first moved in together, I noticed something.
If I asked him to do something it would take forever.
Oh in his defense not always, just most of the time.
I would say something thinking he forgot about my request.
I mean I asked for this 2 weeks ago. He would then say I was nagging.
"I'll get to it"
Okay then. I wouldn't have to ask again if you'd just do it when asked.
I didn't understand this.
When we went to counseling before we got married I brought this up.
The counselor made me laugh when she said, "you can't expect it on your timeline if you don't give him one?" HUH?
She said you must tell him what you'd like done and a date.
Be specific. He can't read your mind, Margaret.
She repeated Rick is not a mind reader. (well hell no because he wouldn't do a lot of his dumb shit if he were)
She gave an example to say, 'Rick I would like it if you could hang that picture for me by Friday.'
She went on to explain, this way he has a deadline, this way he knows you want it done now or by said date/time.
My first thought was why the hell am I asking him if I want it done in 6 months from now? How stupid would that be?
But I listened to her and I tried it. I mean I was paying her.
By God, it worked.
Rick's response was he didn't realize it had to be done right then.
OMG.
Yes, after my head exploded I said nothing like what was really swirling in my head. Instead, I nicely said I don't understand that but from now on I will give you an exact time.
I just wanted to not argue so if this was the way I'd try it.
I felt he wasn't listening and he wasn't respecting me when I asked him something. He felt it was no big deal and I didn't say it had to be done right now. So he didn't understand me either.
After we learned this we both were aware of it more and that too was helpful. One day I asked him to hang a planter but I went a bit further and said I wanted this planter hung by 5pm on Saturday. That made him laugh like crazy. He said, just saying Saturday is fine enough Margaret. Not really Rick because I wanted it up before company comes so 5pm would give me a comfort level.
He said, "Oh I get that." Good, he is getting it now. I don't pick arbitrary dates and times, there is generally a reason but if there is not and I just want it done, then be like Nike and just do it! :-)
Over the years this has continued.
I never ever ask him to do something without a timeline per se.
I will say things like, "Can you please help me reach the wiggly waggly thingy I can't reach...right now?"
Will you be able to get his painted by Sunday?
And even now when I begin to ask something he will usually just jump in and say, "when do you want it done by?"
So, ladies, it works.
I know, I know, you're thinking why should I have to f-ing tell him this?
If I ask I want it done now. But apparently, they don't think like that.
They think, Okay I'll do it, but the games on. So it gets pushed aside and more often than not, they forget until the question comes from you again and then you are accused of nagging.
So try it next time. Especially when you tell them it bothers, hurts, fries your ass, or insert your emotion here. For some reason every woman I have told this after our counseling session decades ago says it works and has stopped a lot of arguments.
I was charged an arm and a leg for that advice.
So there ya go, counseling for free that was passed on by our counselor.

Great post! Very cool that you gave us free advice that really works, and I thank you. This reminds me of the best selling hit from years ago that you may have heard of called Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus, and gave some really great examples of how women and men truly see life and stuff differently. I own that and 5 Love Languages which are both collecting dust right now.(lol) I just noticed that you love 4 of my fave movies - Wedding Crashers, Bandit, Bad Santa and Adam's Rib. I declare I've seen Wedding Crashers and Bandit so much, and I still can't help laughing out loud. You also follow almost as many blogs as me.(lol) Sure hope things are going okay and that you're feeling better these days. Hugs...RO
Very sound couples advice. We are a society that is used to dealing with deadlines at work, in school, paying bills, etc. What not around the house, too?
Ro, I love movies. I just don't love movies made today. I don't care about comic book heros or violence.
When Harry Met Sally is my all time fave only because it is seriously like someone was watching Rick and myself and made a movie. It is our life! If one doesn't laugh at Bandit they had their funny bone removed. When Billy Bob Thornton is flailing on the floor like a fish while they are dancing makes me laugh out loud every damn time. Clever movie. They don't make clever or edge of your seat thrillers anymore.
Jean, well it has worked for us and a few friends. So it's always worth a try right?
Ha, "why the hell am I asking him if I want it done in 6 months from now?" Thanks for the freebie!
This is so true in our house, I mainly just stopped asking. My husband is high-functioning autistic, so likes EVERYTHING specified.
"Let's walk the dogs at 8:03pm", he's good to go.
In general, men think, women feel. I do not say this to be negative, it is just the way it is. A woman will say "I just don't feel like XYZ is the right thing to do." A man will say "I think xyz is a bad thing to do." The beauty of it all is sometimes Woman's "Feel" is dead on even if it seems contrary to Man's think, and visa versa. When men are willing to weigh the "feel" versus their "think" (and women the same) couples make the best decisions.
Women "FEEL" a man should know when to do something, while a man might not "think" it is that important, when you put a specific time on it, we no longer have to think, it becomes clear.
My wife often tells me "You should know!" I tell her our brains are wired differently and what seem apparent to you is not apparent to me, so just TELL ME.
Anyway, great advice. Stop assuming we know what you feel, and we will stop assuming you know what we think.
Together, it is actually a very good combination.
Great post!!
Abby, I would love your husband. :-) I can do 8:03pm.
Joeh - thanks. I have learned that all of what you said is indeed correct. So I can't assume anything. He doesn't think like me and I don't think like him. And that is actually a good thing isn't it?
Perhaps I'm a little on the autistic scale too, but geeze Louise, after almost 38 (!!?!?!) years of marriage you'd think my own spousal unit would have learned to be more specific. About nearly everything.
It really is a Mars/Venus thing, or like Joe says - men are generally more calculating and women are more emotional. I don't know how to weigh a "feel", but I can do a cost/benefit analysis! And to make a complete couple, you DO need to consider both sides.
Brian, wow 38yrs. good for you!! I'm surprised she hasn't figured it out. make her read this😉
There is always a list of several hundred projects in our heads. If you don't specify a time, your new project goes to the end of the list.
Haha. I feel as though this was for my benefit. And I will use it, but I am still a little pissed because he gave me a time (while I was gone to FL) and then didn't do it. I just prefer to do what I can myself and hire out what I can't. I don't like to nag and I don't like to feel resentment over broken promises.
Olga, sounds like a deal breaker perhaps? You gave him a timeline for pete's sake. Boy if I was crazy about him I'd be making him listen to how that makes me feel shitty, disrespected and pisses me off. He'd be in for a hurtin'. Good thing he doesn't know me. :-) Best of luck.
Mike, there is nothing going on in that little head regarding projects. Oh you silly man if you thought I'd fall for that. Just projects you'd like to do but have no plans on doing so ours goes to the end of the line...that I'd buy. :-)
Hum, that is really smart. Wonder if it would work for me. I know if I say that I need to wash the windows with no date, I can put if off indefinitely. But if I say, I should wash the windows today, it gets done. I will try being more specific. Thanks.
Very interesting. It makes sense in a weird way. I am a do it now and get it over with type of person so "malingering" did aggravate me too. Did you find out how to get them to put socks in the hamper too? Hahaha. That was my major gripe. Put it in the hamper not on the floor in front of the hamper.
Barbara I'd pay for that one!! Whoever tells the secret could become very wealthy...I think a lot of women would pay for that lil nugget.
Patti, I don't think it works that way. LOL🤣
I'm getting into any of this. I'm just going to SMILE. See ya Peg.

I wish I had heard that advice a long time ago, lol. There are lots of things I learned in nearly 38 years of marriage. For me the biggest one was not to criticize any house cleaning efforts, or you'll get the "Then you can do it the way you want to!".
It's - that wouldn't fly in this house. I'm a wench. He said that once and I said, nice try, you're not getting out of it. Then I reminded him how he taught me how to some things and I couldn't have gotten away with saying, hey then you do it. He laughed and never uttered those words again. He wanted me to let him off the hook. No way for his daughter or him. I'm mean aren't I?
I've started doing this a bit. "Can you put away the tile (that's been out for a week) this weekend" lol. He actually did it right away so it works!
Julie, yeah! I love that its working for you. They like a job - so you just gave him one. :-)...tee hee
