Husband issues

Company coming again.
This person I really like and can't wait to see.
She lives in Orange County California and as you can imagine we don't get together all that often.

Last time was in Chicago - we met in the middle so to speak.
She has business in DC so she is coming tomorrow night to play with Rick and me for the weekend and then begin working on Monday in DC.

I imagine there will be lots of laughing, talking, drinking and eating.
She is the only person I know as an adult shorter than me. I love that.

Last evening I was cleaning up the kitchen.
I was doing dinner dishes and then asked Rick to clean the top of the fridge.
As I came down the stairs I caught a glimpse of the top of the fridge and thought, oooh gross.
Rick doesn't have to get a ladder to clean the top of the fridge like I do.

After he was done cleaning it he said, "Therese is shorter than you do you really think she will see this?"
I explained that it had nothing to do with her coming. I came down the steps and saw the dust and thought it should be cleaned.
He didn't believe me. But that was the reason.
Honestly, it doesn't matter if he believed me, it is now clean.

Rick notices nothing.
Until there is a smell he doesn't give a shit. Smells get to him big time.
He trimmed his beard and left all the damn hair in the sink.
Now, why can't he rinse that down? I wish they were stinky.
The whole sink had little black hairs and on top of the vanity.

So I left it there.
After work, he went to take a shower and I pointed this out.
He said, "But it's my sink, you have your own sink so I shouldn't have to do this if I don't want to"
You sound like a child Richard.
Laughing he said, "I am a child with a beard. I'd have done it eventually."
No, he wouldn't have. He was laughing because he knew he wouldn't do it eventually. Over time he would use the sink and brush his teeth and the water would eventually clean it. A week or so later. That is good enough for him, but for some reason, it really bugs me.

Before I got him his own magnifying mirror to mount on his side of the vanity he would trim his beard using my mirror. I'd have hairs all over my mirror, my side of the vanity and in my sink. Loved it when I went to put on my makeup but couldn't see through the hair on the mirror.
Apparently, he thinks since it's his side he can do whatever he wants.
Sadly, I sort of understand his logic and I admit that bothers me a bit.
Probably also why I don't bust his balls too badly on this.

As he stepped into the shower yesterday I cleaned it up.
He has known me for 31 years. I have lived with him for 29 years.
Knowing I am anal retentive about this stuff isn't new to him.
He frustrates me when it comes to this stuff.

I left something on the steps of his that he put there.
He walked by it for a month and never picked it up as he was going up the stairs.
I played this game until my head exploded and did it myself.
31 days he left it there. It was his object, NOT mine.

I recall an episode on Everybody Loves Raymond where Ray had left his suitcase on the steps and he would walk by and never carry it back upstairs.
It's like that only we don't have a big ugly fight as they did on the show.
After the 31 days, I mentioned it.
He laughed and said, "huh, didn't notice. Are you sure it's been that long?"
"Yes, I am certain"
"Why didn't you just take it upstairs if it bothered you so much?"
Why should I, it is not mine and you put it there?"
"Well, you had to move it to vacuum the steps so as you went up the steps you could have put it in my closet."
"Yes, I could have. Or you could have every time you went by it on the way upstairs. I am not your mom and I shouldn't have to clean up after you."
Now he is really laughing. He says he is sorry but he'll do it again trust me.
He heartily laughs, I hit his arm. That was our big fight.
I suppose if that is my biggest beef I should be thankful.
Not my biggest, but it is in the top 5.
His #1 beef with me is that I leave cabinet doors open.
I can walk under them, he can't. Oops.😉

I just know he would make that cute little Marie Kondo's head explode.

I remember that Everybody Loves Raymond show. That was so funny but crazy. I sometimes forget the cabinet doors open but I'm the one who always smashes one's head on the cabinet. Ouch and Mary Lou laughs and says you big dummy, I told you. I don't remember her telling me that but she did. See ya Peg.

Oh, I hear ya sista!
Living with a husband and three sons has about been the death of me. The messes that they are mysteriously oblivious to is mind boggling.
Other than that, though, they're all pretty nice guys as is your Rick. It's the cross we must bear.

Marie Kondo's head would definitely explode at my house. My motto is if I put it there, leave it there. I'll move it when I'm ready. I don't need someone else moving it and then not being able to find it six months later. Go be a neat freak in your own room. ... OH WAIT! She's worse than I am!

Paul, now that's funny.

Abby, you are correct. I can't fathom living with 4 men. I am shaking my head as I type this. I guess I'd throw my hands in the air and just give up.

Mike well I think if Claudia is just like you then it's a match made in heaven. I'm too anal retentive and I'd get itchy with that.

LOL! I would lose my mind! Everything has a place! When I dated my last ex; I would go over to his house and it drove me nuts! He was so nonchalant - I would visit and do his laundry; clean the kitchen; weed the yard...come to think of it I did everything. Never again! HA! I can't stand things messy or out of place - now we all see why I am still single! HA!

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Well now Ann, that's not true or I'd be single.
I have a man who likes a nice clutter home free yet he does leave his clothes 6 ft from the laundry room on the floor in the bedroom. Too tired to walk that 6 ft Rick? and the whiskers in the sink.
I think a perfect marriage would be 2 master bathrooms, his and hers. We have 2 walk-in closets why not? I need to win the lottery! :-)

"I'm not your mother!" How many wives have said those words more than a few times? I know I have. I've also been amazed that a man could be adult enough to trim a beard but child-like enough to expect someone else to clean the sink afterward. My husband was guilty of that. My youngest niece once said, "What's the big deal, Aunt Jean? You turn on the faucet, the hair is gone. It takes less time and energy to do it yourself than to pick a fight about it.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Yes Jean, we must pick our battles.
I normally just do it. But lately he's been a bit worse and I needed to show him what he did so he could understand what I am dealing with. He has done the same to me when something bothers him so I can "get it" as he says. He even said when I told him I was writing about this that he honestly doesn't see it. Sadly that's true even if I don't understand it. I just shake my head because it is so hard to believe. Selective hearing, selective sight. :-) All things considered, my life could be far worse and I realize that.

I have to be honest here and say both my partner and myself are pretty tidy. Everything has a home and it goes back there. Clutter gets sold on ebay or taking to the clothes bank or charity shop.

Dave Barry has the best angle on the differences between men and women regarding cleaning. He says we just don't see dirt the same way.

"Women see the actual dirt molecules. Men don't notice the dirt until there's enough to support agriculture."

I'm not perfect but I believe in the - if you open it, close it; if you take it out, put it back; and if you ever want to use my bathroom again, it'd better look like it did when you walked in. Hahaha.

Oh, sigh. Men. Are they stupid, or what?

My ideas would only escalate the confrontation. Have you ever seen "War of the Roses" with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner? Worthwhile.

Mike was incredibly neat and never left anything in a mess. He was a treasure. My new male friend is neat but does not meet the high bar I had become used to. We shall see how this plays out!

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Bluzdude - I LOVE Dave Berry's take on this. I read it to Rick who almost chocked on his coffee.

Susan - I loved War of the Roses. Rick and I laughed a lot through the movie and when it was over the woman next to us asked how we could laugh at this. I just told her we had each been divorced before and we could relate and besides we sickos. She looked me up and down and shook her head and walked away. That made me laugh even more!!

Olga - that is the reason I always tell my friends I will never marry again. I got a good one. I have also trained him well. I can't go through all that again. wink wink.

Barbara, You are singing to the choir! :-)

Well, if you could see my desk right now ~ ugh. I am the guilty part who throws their jacket on the chair by the door, even though the coat closet is only a few steps away. I sometimes leave something on the bottom step, but I usually take care of it after the 2nd or 3rd trip. The worst was a couple of months ago when I was cleaning out my closet and left the step stool nearby (which we need to find stuff on the top shelf of the pantry downstairs) ~ that took a month. I laughed to myself when we realized it was upstairs and decided whatever it was we needed on that top shelf really wasn't that important.
I still haven't quite finished the closet.......

LL - you are so damn lucky. I'm that way but the love of my life is not.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

It's - you need to live with my husband. :-) I think it's best when 2 people who are like that live together. We are a mixed marriage. :-)

As your story unfolded about the stairs, I kept thinking "where have I heard this before?" Thanks for the Raymond reference or I could have wasted half a day trying to remember the source. Hey, as long as the fights are small, no big deal. Like you said, things could be worse.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Patti, I loved Everybody Loves Raymond. So much like my family (the parents) The whole Italian food thing you know? As my grandmother would say when I said I wasn't hungry, "Okay dear, just have a sandwich then." You had to eat something. God forbid if you just ate, didn't matter.
Have a nice weekend.

I asked Scott if I died if he'd just live in filth or if he'd get a replacement person to clean for him.

Margaret (Peggy or Peg too) said...

Well Julie, his answer was?.....

He was totally confused on why I was asking him lol
