Concerts

Rick and I saw that Bob Segar was going to be in town in the spring/summer.
Now I saw Bob in the '70s and it was great!
But boy I would enjoy that again.

So we went to check out some tickets.
Oh my.
I don't think a ticket was even as high as $20 when I saw him in the 70s
Now we could get 2 tickets to sit on a hill in the grass for a mere $220.00
Rick made me laugh when I asked him if he could do the lawn.
He said I can sit on the grass, it's getting up that is the issue.
That made me laugh.
He is on the floor all the time with the dog, he can get up.
But I get it, he doesn't want to sit on the grass and he won't be comfortable for 2 hrs.
So we looked at tickets under the "pavilion" with chairs.
It would be a mere $500+ (2 tickets) if we would like to see the stage.
I hate going to a concert and having to watch it on TV's they have all around.  Might as well stay home to me.

So I am stuck listening to my albums, Pandora and the like and just remember what a great concert it was in 1976.
I don't think I can pay that kind of money until I win the lottery.
I mean I love him, but I will chalk this one up to been there done that.
Because of these crazy prices I've missed a lot of bands I would have loved to see, Eagles, Fogarty, to name a few that were somewhat recent.

Perhaps if the Beatles came back from the dead and had a concert I'd pay that kind of money.

Speaking of concerts my friend and I were talking about meeting people who you like in person. I have not met any celebrity only a few singers from my airport ticket counter days. One was Grace Slick.
She was just like you'd think she was.
For you young kids, she was the lead singer in a band called Jefferson Airplane. She was good and salty. Google her.

I recall a time when there was an old time group of guys that were before my time. I was aware of them, Dion is the one I remember of this group.
After I worked the ticket counter I was going on a flight to see a friend.
I got on the plane and took the last seat that was available. This plane was a small jet and I'm sorry I don't recall which one. But there was no first class.

When we landed this man was so awful. He was in the back across from me. Everyone stood up to deplane and he was so angry that he wasn't getting off first. So this man Dion who thought he was so important kept telling everyone he was important and to sit down and let him get off the plane first. He had a connection to make. One woman turned around and said, we all do buddy. He was most obnoxious. I kept thinking, this is not the early 60's Dion, you are not a big deal and these people don't even know who the hell you are. Shut up and sit down and wait your turn. He just got worse. He was still good looking but my goodness he was a royal ass.

Then one day in another airport I was hurrying to get to the baggage claim.  I dropped a bag and as I bent down to pick it up I hit someone's head who was picking up my bag for me. (We were walking opposite ways)
I looked up at him and I said, "Oh my God it's you"
(yes, I'm an idiot)
He laughed and said, "Yep it's me, you got this?"
I took my bag from his hand and said I did, I thanked him and told him I loved his music and his show at the Coliseum. He smiled, said thanks and turned and walked away.
I was a total dolt!
It was John Mellencamp.  After my shock of it being "him" I realized boy he is short. Funny how all rock musicians are so short. (except Huey Lewis, who yes, I met at the ticket counter)

So I think I am at that age and that stage of poor enough that I won't get to see these oldies in concert again. I will just have to replay the memories and play the albums.

I don't know how they can fill up a place at $500 for a pair of tickets but I'm betting they even have tickets that are even higher. I have given up on seeing live shows because even back ten years when I checked the prices they were too rich for my blood.

Love your suitcase Mellencamp story! I really like him. I've met a few famous people up close and personal but the only singers/actors were Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. Now, that dates me! The last live concert I went to was Yanni. That dates, me too. LOL But boy was it a great concert!

WOW!The only person that I ever met was Tom Jones and at that show women were throwing their bras all over the stage. It was kind of funny. To see any of the famous singers, you have to pay an arm & a leg and you so far away you can't even see them. I prefer to see them from my TV. See ya Peg.

Jean, I liked Yanni a little bit in the early 90's. :-) Roy Rogers and Dale Evans was a big before me. Although I just watched an episode (1st time) on FETV. Rick asked if I ever watched Roy Rodgers and I said no and he made me watch it. Oh dear.

Paul, Ooh Tom Jones I would see and keep my bra and panties on. I've seen women throw their panties at him and it cracks me up.

I'm actually a bit surprised that Bob Seger can pull in that much $$ for concert tix these days, but good for him!
You banged (heads) with John Mellencamp? Cool. I've heard he's relatively short. I was a big fan of his back in high school. He's engaged to Meg Ryan, probably since you're taken ;)

Abby his last album in 2018 was his highest debut in his career. I think that helps him garner big bucks. (I heard this on CBS news) But the Eagles are even more expensive. And one of them is dead. It's crazy. Yes, I know he's engaged to Meg. Seems odd to me. He's such a cranky old man if you've seen him interviewed of late. I watch Dan Rather on AXS and he interviewed him for an hour show and man he is bitter and cranky. (John, not Dan)

I would hate to be famous and have everyone recognize me where ever I went. I like anonymity better.

And yes I had to click images again on recaptcha.

Something ate my comment. Can't believe those prices and that there are people willing to pay.
I met 3 celebrities--one was an adorable great guy, the other two were jerks. The neat guy was Perry Como and the jerks were Jackie Gleason and Arnold Palmer.

I lose my mind when I meet famous people! Not sure why since they are just like us...HA! I woudl not have been able to speak if I saw Mellencamp! What an encounter! It is crazy how much concert tickets are no days - there are very few people I will pay that much to see!

My mom got tickets to Paul McCartney and took me, that was the best! No idea what my dad paid for those but we were on the floor section so we could see him.

I rode in an elevator with Criss Angel in Vegas but didn't know who he was until we got off and saw a billboard lol.

I've seen over 100 concerts, mostly between 1980 and 1995, when I worked in the record business (In a previous life, worked in, then managed record stores [remember them?] and eventually worked in the retailer's home office.) So I've been lucky enough to have seen a lot of shows and meet a lot of rock stars. I've got two points to make from that...

1) Concert prices are INSANE now, but it's no accident. Promoters know that the demographic who grew up with Bob Seger and John Mellencamp has a lot more disposable income than teenagers do, hence the $100+ prices. (In my heyday, it was a rare show that cost more than $25.)

2) If you happen to meet someone famous, just try to act like it's some guy (or gal) from down the street. Talk to them like a normal person. Compliment them if you want, but try not to gush. They'll appreciate it and you won't look like a fawning maniac. Then you can freak out once you go your own ways!

Mike - I went to blogger forum for help but have yet to receive any. I'm sorry.

Ann, I try to act like they are just another customer when I worked at the airline. But bumping into John M was a bit different.

Bluzdude, yep I think all these bands know we older people love the reminising of our youth as well as having a disposable income. However I am not spending that kind of money on a concert when I am not all that fond of people anymore. :-) (crowds)

Julie, I know who Criss Angel is and don't think I'd realize it was him when in the elevator.

Patti - I met Arnold Palmer because a good friend of mine was his private pilot. You are correct he was an ass. Everyone has said Jackie Gleason was a pompous ass but I never met he or Perry Como. I can see Perry being kind.
