Today was another snow day. I'm ready for spring, how about you?
My hillbilly husband shoveled a path from our back door to the garage. He then took the leaf blower and blew the snow off the steps. Honestly, what was wrong with the shovel? Boys and their toys.
Snow days in the south are far different. This would not be a snow day up north. But as snow goes, this was a lot for us, and back-to-back with the ice storm has made it a fun couple of weeks of bone-chilling cold.
Last week was a haze. I'm retired. I'm not accustomed to being in one place or another at a specific time and having to dress nicely. Boy, have I taken to this retirement life. It's more like Lazy Life for me. I like it most of the time, not all of the time.
My last meal was on Wednesday at 1pm. I didn't eat again until Friday at 3pm. Your husband making pizza during this time should be justifiable homicide when you're starving and can't eat.
There was no prep for the endoscopy except no smoking for 2 days.
That is a non-issue, so that was easy.
But the old prep for the colonoscopy was as normal and horrific.
I've had 3 or 4 of them now, and I can say without a doubt this was the worst prep ever.
The stuff I had to drink tasted like 16oz of water with 1 cup of salt and a chemical strawberry taste and smell. It was truly horrific. I had 2 of those fun 16-ozers. Geez. I also don't do what they tell you, like start the first 16 oz at 6pm. I don't think so. Then they wanted me to take the last 16oz in the morning. When?? I have to be there at 10am. It's a 45-minute drive. Nope, not doing that. No port-a-potty on the road!!
I took one at 3 p.m. and one at 7 p.m. This way, I could get a couple of hours of sleep. When I got home, I had scrambled eggs and a piece of toast, and I said to Rick I'd really like to sleep. So I did. I woke up hungry again. I had some soup, and that was it. I got full easily. Thank goodness.
They found nothing wrong with the colon, so I made the proclamation that I am no longer going to have another one of these dreadful things. I am weeks shy of 70. I'm done. If they should invent a better way, I'll try that, but this is the pits!
As for my endoscopy, I have GERD. Lovely name, isn't it?
At least now I know why I'm nauseated all the time and have heartburn, etc.
He told me what foods not to eat. So add all those to my gluten-free list, and what is left? Oh, air! I can have air and coffee.
Friday is my biopsy, and I was talking to my sister. She told me it hurt like hell. Oh goodie. I was sharing with her what the nurse called and told me to wear to this biopsy event. Layers. I was also told to wear a bra. I said okay. I think I may have giggled a bit. She said, "Oh, if you wear one all the time, that seems weird, but we pack ice in the bra for you to wear home, so it's necessary." I said, "Okay, no problem."
But I must say I was thinking that if this were a man's biopsy on his breast, because we know they get breast cancer too, how would she send him home? Ice packs wrapped in Ace bandages, perhaps? I just found that an odd request, but as always, I will do as I am told, and besides, I don't leave the house without a bra on...unfortunately.
And lastly, in this medical update of horrors.
I awoke on Friday to my "Betty" eye blood red. There was a clump of burgundy under the eye and a full 1/2 circle of deep red all around my eye. It hurt like hell. So needless to say I called my dr.'s office. Closed due to the weather as was everything.
I left an email message in my portal to my doctor asking if I should be concerned. Not hearing from anyone, I assumed it was the weather; I couldn't go anywhere, and a normal Urgent care could not assist me in this matter. So I waited.
We were watching a movie, and I got a call from a doctor in the Duke ER. It was almost 8pm. She was given my email and said I should come in now. I explained we had had a bottle of wine, and I don't think I can drive up there right now. She was not happy with me. She asked where it was I lived. When I told her, she went, Oh. She said, Then get here in the AM.
In the AM, it was so much better, so I didn't drive up to Duke.
I got a call today from the doctor's office. My doctor is out until Wednesday.
They asked if I could come in at 8:15 on Monday. They didn't care that it looked okay; they said he told them it was imperative. They spoke to my doctor, who is on paternity leave. So I'm going up there. I had an appointment already on the books for the 24th. He was adamant that I not wait. Okay, that's not scary.
I am in medical hell right now and I want off this ride.
This was our snowfall from my front window. It looks so pretty, doesn't it?

I loved the cartoon Peg. Today I can't even shovel the snow. Luckily, I have fantastic neighbors ( friends ) who have been cleaning our driveway and sidewalk.
I see that you are going through hell at the moment. I'll be thinking. In April I have spend an overnight at the Sleep Disorder Clinic. I thought retirement meant life of Riley but all I see is more problems. Take it easy my friend.
Cruisin Paul
You too Paul. Rick has had a sleep study and he told me it was difficult to sleep. Which defeats the purpose. Hope yours goes well
OMG that cartoon made me laugh!
Air and coffee? I hate to break it to you, but coffee is bad for acid reflux unless it's decaf and a low-acid kind. Is your doctor going to put you on stomich-acid-reducing medication? That solves acid reflux very nicely. I've been on it for years.
Yes I pick up my new meds tomorrow. So just air then?😀
God willing, I will have my last colonoscopy three years from now and then be done with them. The medicine for GERD does wonders, but there are a lot of them out there and you'll have to find the one that works for you.
I had a breast lump biopsied in August and it was no big deal. Not painful. Not fun but not painful; no worse than a pinch, let's say, and a bit of pressure. I hope your experience will be the same. -Kate
This is too much and a little more. I hope this all gets sorted soon.
I'm sorry.
That's what I assumed. My sister is full of shit most days so I'll chalk it up to that. 😄
Let's hope my new rx is one that works!
Man, they are slowly and surely removing things from your life that you enjoy, aren't they?
I'm terrified that one day, a doctor will tell me that my life depends on maintaining a diet of broccoli, cauliflower, and yams. At that point, I may as well walk into traffic.
I remember after my colonoscopy, I was like, "I just completely emptied my colon. Time to fill it up again!"
It seems I'm down to airi but even then im doubtful I'll lose weight.
Individual decisions: Over the years, I've "given up" a few routine medical tests. After my first colonoscopy at about age 60, I considered that I am not at high risk and gave them up. I have taken one at-home test since then (I'm nearly 88). I gave up mammograms after about age 70, having started them at about age 45. On my 57th birthday, I had a painful breast biopsy - painful, because they kept sticking a needle into my breast to show (in an X-ray) where they were working. Ouch! Ouch! I declined a test to determine my heart's ejection fraction since I am really to old to consider heart surgery to correct my leaky valve(s), anyway. My ejection fraction was good 10 years ago.
GERD is no fun and can be scary.
Yeah, as we accumulate chronic conditions, our eating/drinking options dwindle. I'll share a diet that a friend texted me with you: It was a cartoon showing a plate of ice cubes. The laugh was on her as I am on restricted liquids - lol. I'll continue wish you well - and - good luck with Betty! She is really, really scary.
Oh Cop I get all of this. Its like I was good, then I retired, then it went downhill quickly! Betty is the one that scares me too, if im honest.
Well at least the colonoscopy was good :( Sheesh you need a break.
Thx, that made me laugh!!!
Those tests are not fun. I hope you get off the medical carousel. GERD is painful. My husband has it. There are prescription drugs that help but it's still there. He has lost 20 pounds recently & says his has improved greatly.
OMG. Love that cartoon. I remember going through a spell some years back when every body issue was repaired, something new would break down. I'm off the body problems and now my mind is falling apart. Super Glue works better on your body than your mind. Just fyi.
Gee thx for the tip Barbara!🤣 well I hope im off this train soon!!
I want off too. I got meds so here's to no more nausea or heartburn
I have to agree that the recommended timing for those colonoscopy preps seems very unintuitive based on their effects. Haha. I did get up at 4 am on the morning of, but as I had a supply of Depends, I did my best to sleep some more before it was time to go. Did I wear nice clothes and put on makeup and stuff? Nope. They aren't going to be looking at that anyway :-)
Loved the memes, especially the last one. Like you I would never show that to Romeo, because he's always looking at what I'm wearing and asking if I'm cold!
I know I will have to go for my next one, as they removed some uninvited guests from my colon at the last one.
I am 65 and thinking I've had my last colonoscopy.
